Not sure if this is the right section, as it could be applicable in the Character section.
I just felt compelled to give BioWare a shout out for creating a superb storytelling mechanic through Varric and Cassandra. This is probably among my favorite aspects of the game. The execution of this device just works so well in this game, and while there seems to be a lot of concern about such mundane things (to me) as mob encounter complexity and the inability to change armor for companions, I can't help but appreciate how much this contributed to the primary purpose of this game--storytelling.
The exchanges between Varric and Cassandra were just great--well written, and well designed. I really liked the stylized art direction which accompanied Varric's monologues with each act as well. I also think that the character choices for this device were well chosen. Varric is arguably one of the best characters in the game overall, IMO. He certainly has a charm about him--he looks exactly how he ought to look,he's well voiced; and at least during my first playthrough, he really began to feel like Hawke's brother from another mother as the game progressed. He's witty and loves to embellish the details in his own sly little way, which is great. And this is a beautiful contrast with Cassandra's character--the stern, driven, devout, somewhat mysterious, exoticly voiced, smolderingly gorgeous Seeker that she is, who we unfortunately don't get to interact with (yet! *crossfingers*). I can only hope they both get much more screen time in future installments.
As mentioned before, Varric loves to embellish his stories, and I adored these parts of this particular storytelling device--especially the intro and the epic solo tale he spins about his own personal companion quest down the road. These parts in particular were a lot of fun to me.
In any case, just wanted to give some props and here's hoping for some more Varric and Cassandra (LI, go, go!)

I approve of the entirety of this thread, except for the fact that Cassandra's voice is like rusty nails shoved into my spine.

Varric feels like the only character with depth and for me he carries a lot of the slack from the other weak characters.

Varric is the man - I would have liked the game much better if I actually played him watching the story unfold before him.
