The main thing is that most people see this game as a letdown. Dumbing down a system that has worked well over a decade. Why alienate your most loyal customers and just go for the quick buck?

The result :

Professionals have given it a lower score when compared to DA:O and user scores are at rock bottom. Gamespot is pretty reliable and I think it stands at 7/10.

User score average over metacritic is around 4/10

There's a strong message here and I hope Bioware listens.Lets hope this storm fires them up and we will see some quality DLC's atleast.

Its a mistake for you to use metacritic as an example here given the average score from game critics (the professionals you mention) is at 84%, when the user scores are at 4/10. But theres a reason game critics are employed to review games and not users - they won't just stamp their feet at the first thing that goes wrong and immediately give the game 1/10. Granted not all users do this but enough will to warp any "user review" to the point I will rarely take it seriously.

More importantly the game has issues other than the story and perceived lack of choice as to why it has got these lower scores. Mostly because of the copy pasted environments, lack of variety on location and lesser longevity of the game. The story is still the strongest selling point.

As I stated in another post -

If I could have found Sir Pounce A'lot and put him in the Chantry without Anders knowing - and then told him about it after he blew it up. I actually would have liked the game more.

"Hawke" You want Justice you freak - there it is.

I never trust professionals, because they have to give decent scores to major releases. You cant bite the hand that feeds you.

Metacritic is often infested with trash reviews and people who give needlessly low scores but at the same time others pump up the score to create a balance.

The most important thing is to read through them and see what the general consensus is. DA2 has been a letdown for many people but that's how it goes.

Future is the important thing.

Completely agree with the OP, splendid post.

I liked that Hawke wasn't a god like Shepard. Shepard can solve huge conflicts and persuade people to do almost anything just by clicking the Paragon button. It can get to the point where it is just not believable. With Hawke I felt like I was dealing with real people, and there was no 100% happy ending with no consequences. I liked that.

And it is true, your choices have little effect on Kirkwall. It is all about how they affect Hawke and your companions:

Whether Hawke is pro-Mage or pro-Templar throughout the game will have a huge effect on several of your companions' friendship/rivalry paths.

Merril and Fenris can end up very differently depending on if you take the friendship or rivalry path. This goes for almost all the companions.

Anders and Sebastian can have very different endings in the climax.

That's just a few examples. Origins' decisions are about how they change the fate of Ferelden. DA2's decisions are about how they change the fate of Hawke and your companions.

That's true. Many people have different gripes with Dragon Age 2.

A lot is related to fundamental gameplay changes like the isometric camera, lack of customization, recycled maps and sidequest that you must perform constantly in the same area .

Bioware really has a chance to do some good with the possible DLC's though. They need to feel out the community and up their game again.

So - this is Dragon Age: Friend's Edition?

There's a much better game for that called The Sims 3 (and I've played it, I'm not insulting it at all)

They're even coming out with Sims Medieval next week - I'm going to name my city Kirkwall.

well, even at 8.0 is pretty low for Bioware games, their games almost always hit the 9.0 bar.

True enough, the expectations are very high.

I sincerely hope the second instalment of Witcher is a huge success. Fierce competition between companies like Bioware, Bethesda and CDPR will definitely be good for the whole genre.

I disagree with your stance and thoughts on the story.....but THAT would be so epic. I hated having to choose templar/mage, but that would've made up for it.

For some reason, while reading the back-and-forth on this subject, I imagine this is how some people felt about Empire Strikes Back once upon a time. Hell, some probably STILL feel Empire was a cop out.

I personally enjoyed the story and the way everything works out. I think there's more technical problems with the game than story problems. But, I think this game has little chance to win over some for 2 reasons: 1) The expectations were waaaaaaaay too high and the game would have to have been flawless and 2) It's a perceived middle point of a story. Same with books, movies (the aforementioned Empire being the ultimate nerd example) and other forms of entertainment, the middle story is the most criticized and most difficult to accept. I would almost guarantee that ME3 and DA3 will both be more widely accepted, higher rated, and universally beloved than ME2 and DA2 will ever be. Except for the fringe persons, such as myself. To me, ME2 and DA2 were overall better than the previous installment.

oh no~~~~ You're so cruel!!! I love Ser Pounce A'lot!!!! If my apartment allow pets, I'll have a cat and name him Ser Pounce A'lot!

But anyways... I think Bioware tried a very very different approach compare to its traditional "formula". The courage of taking this risk is quite admirable. After all, if we don't try different things, we'll end up laying the same old game over and over again.

I hope Bioware keep trying new things, new way to tell a story, new kind of compainions and NPCs, new system, new places to visit, new culture to experience... that'd be something to look forward to, not another Joseph Campbell hero.
