I want to play a 'good' character, but i'm not sure about the friend/rival thing.

Well I'd suggest rivalry with Isabella and Sebastian, because their friendship is glitched to make you weaker.

Due to very annoying bugs (isabella's friendship causes gradual slow down of animation speed and sebastian's friendship causes gradual negative damage resistance) I'd rival them, even though I personally adore Isabella as a friend.
Rivalry and Friendship aren't exactly equivalents of evil and good. It's just an indicator wether your character 'clicks' together with the companion or constantly butts heads with them. Both paths are rewarding, and full rival companion can be just as loyal as a full friend.
I actually prefer some companions as rivals, disagreements are fun, especially in the romance subplots

Just as a note, there's a fix for the Isabela and Sebastian friendship glitches (as long as you're on the PC; I'm not sure if the bug hits consoles, I didn't seem to notice when I played the game on the PS3, but I sure as hell did on the PC). It's an easy fix, too, if a bit annoying at times, so don't let that be the deciding factor.
