The only side effect is a glitch involving getting more points than you should to reallocate. There's another thread somewhere on how to avoid it. I think it's under the support section.

I love the Maker's Sigh potion. Just be aware that for Hawke it not only lets you reallocate your points, but it will reset armor/clothing and accessories too so you will have to re-do those choices as well. The potion can also be used by any party member.
