You can only use them til Act 2. Sometimes, you can also use them in the final battle.

Oh, so even if I don't take Bethany with me into the Deep Roads(I took Carver first playthrough), I still lose her? Wow, that sucks.

You lose Carver/Bethany no matter what you do, unfortunately. I liked Beth

Yes, you have a few choices dealing with the Deep Roads. Since this is a Spoiler board I will try not to ruin too much ...

But you can loose them permanently, or make a choice that will have them leave temporarily but return near the end of the game. So giving them anything special would sort of be a waste really.
