So I started a rogue hawke and went full dw tree and assassin tree. I was playing on normal, and absolutely rocked act 1 and about half of act 2. Read the nightmare vanguard build post and tried that...its going ok but I have to reload fights a lot. Went back to my rogue, switched the difficulty to hard, and noticed that hawke was just dying non-stop. I repsec'd for assassin/duelist/scoundrel, and I'm mostly using a bow. It's working exceptionally well, doing TONS of damage even on hard.

On hard, I'm typically running merril, anders, rogue hawke, and fenris. I mostly control fenris and play him with the same style as the ultimate vanguard nightmare guide suggests. When monsters group up on him, which they inevitably do, I switch to merril and use her aoe blood magic thing and tempest. Anders is full vengeance (no panacea), and full primal, while merril has her unique tree basically maxed, along with maxed primal, and is starting on arcane.

Anyways, while this makeup seems to work really, really well on hard, I've got a feeling it's not ideal for nightmare.

Here's my take on nightmare, so far:

- Tanking isn't the best option. Ideally you're redirecting threat to a 2h warrior (fenris or hawke), and running from group to group with your warrior. Hit a couple of times with some devastating aoe, then move on. This way, the only melee damaging enemies that are in range are typically disabled and you're gone before they hit you.

-You need ways to heal without actually healing. Glyph of paralysis, glyph of repulsion, and barrier do this really well. Other cc is also useful. I haven't tried sleep/coma, or any of the entropy tree really, but it seems pretty useful if the paralysis lasts a few seconds.

-cross class combos are really the only way to mow down enemies fast enough to overcome the massive waves. Every character should have several ways of opening and closing these combos.

-don't focus solely on dps stats. get those stats up so that you can use equipment, but dont forget health/stamina. survivability + ccc is the way to win in nightmare.

-runes are good, especially on companions!!!

Gotta run, but I'm going to build this into a guide for leveling a party in nightmare. Currently, a lot of the guides seem to be from people that have respec'd into a nice build, and the companions' skills aren't really very viable at low levels. Any feedback with suggestions for things I'm forgetting will be appreciated. Also, if someone could help me with setting up the tactics for the companions, that would be great. For a lot of it, I'll be taking from teh vanguard guide.
