So I've been playing a lot with Aveline in my party, and I've usually got her Upgraded Shield Defense enabled all the time... as I've been recently looking for better ways to use my existing talents I found this review of Shield Defense online:

I'm a bit surprised, i guess i never really thought through the 25% damage reduction. I don't micro-manage Aveline so i guess i didn't really notice much of what the guy said.
What do you all think? Is it truly a useless skill? I might just re-spec Aveline and try something else for her.

Its useful when tanking a single boss plus whatever adds there might be around. Just scatter for the damage on the adds and keep Aveline poking at the boss.

I never realized that it changes your attack to single target. I mean i noticed that i'm only hitting 1 enemy but I figured the other ones were out of my arc. The skill I think is still useful if you're tanking a SERIOUSLY huge mob, or a boss. SnS has no good threat generation skills besides "taunt" really. I've only seen 1 sword with % threat generation, and I don't know how to get the rune if there is one. I'm definitely going to start using it less though, thanks.

It's one of those activated abilities you want to leave off most of the time and activate only when the heat is rising.
Also I'm pretty sure I've seen Aveline hit multiple enemies with shield defense activated, the angle is just as narrow as when it's off.

i only use shield defense after a lay a solid base of threat... threat generating is not that big of deal imho due to being able to steal it off others so easily (rouges, different skills, ect).
the thing that annoys me the most is that the charging animation goes off, so its hard to dart around, personally, the -25% damage thing is bs, you already need stamina to sustain it, and your giving up the solid damage of a 2h or dual wielding. why even put that on?

You use Shield Defense because it can reduce damage taken by a lot. Switch it on when you need it.

The role of a SnS tank isn't to be dishing damage - they should just be there taking the hits.
Between taunt and battle synergy you should be able to draw most of the agro, and then they just stand there while the thief and mage kill them.
That's how I roll on nightmare, anyhow.

I was thinking of setting Aveline to "on HP less than 50%, turn on Shield Defense"
and then maybe turn it off if HP > 90%?
and then maybe turn it off if HP > 90%?
