Just started a new game on nightmare, and I'm finding the most troublesome thing about this mode is the knockback effect that many enemies have on their attacks. This has been epsecially bothersome when fighting Abominations. Every one of their attacks sends my characters reeling back for a good second or two. If I get 2 or 3 hitting me at once, I can't do anything. Can't move, can't drink a potion, can't use any abilities, nothing.
How do I deal with this? Do I need to pump points into strength on every character to raise their fortitude, or do I just need to adjust my tactics and try to kill them faster?
Thanks
Nightmare knockback

Depends on your party. Tank should taunt them, then focus fire on one at a time using all the CC© ability/spells you have. Best thing I've found to use is stagger/chain lightning as both are available early in the game. Early in nightmare the abominations are a huge pain.

Hmm. So I guess my answer then is "kill them faster." Thanks.

1) Use taunt and AOE on the warrior to keep aggro on him.
2) The few enemies who ingnore the warrior should be CCed and focused first by all your other characters.
Note :
- You can use spells like barrier to temporarily help against knockback.
- If you are a mage, you can specialize in the force tree which has a skill that gives you 100 fortitude. It helps but you will notice that even then some bosses will still knock you down even when they don't do enough damage for it to happen.

I'm thinking my main mistake was not getting some good CCC synergy going sooner. I spread my talents a little too thin out of the gate. I'll respec when I get a chance and see if things are better.

I tend to retreat to a choke point when battle starts. I use two mages (Anders and Merril) with petrify, crushing prison, paralysis spells and keep a 2H warrior tank (Fenris) in the chokepoint protecting them and my rogue Hawke alternating between ranged and daggers with cross class combos.
If you can get upgraded CCC versions of Petrify, Stonefist, Chain Lighting, (with Galvinism), Winters Grasp, Spirit Bolt, Crushing Prison for both of your mages you can do some serious CCC damage on Nightmare with working combos with your 2H warrior and a Rogue with upgraded Assassinate,. Exploding Shot and Fatiguing Fog.
Also upgraded Mind Blast helps protect from getting overrun.

There's a passive talent in the Defender tree, available by level 5, which gives 100% knockback resistance. Aveline also has a passive talent in her personal tree that gives 100% knockback resistance and 100% stun resist as well, but it's not available until level 13. I've also found at least one item (an amulet iirc) that gives you knockback immunity when equipped.
