I like the character, though, I really can't help but laugh at his appearance. I just don't know what to think about his armour and the way it makes his body look gangly and weirdly proportioned...or the way he runs.

...Of course, this coupled with how much of a badass he is, certainly makes him a true badass.

True Story.

I kind of like Fenris. I think he's pretty cool guy, and he's an awesome party member.

I'm kind of 50/50 on this. Fenris pissed me off in alot of ways, but some aspects of his character I thought were ok. The main reasons I found him annoying at times was because he was always crapping on the Mages in our party.  Sometimes while asking for their help.  Because that's a way to convince a person to help you.  By telling their sister (and possible Hawke if your mage) that they are an abomination and they should be lynched.  This all directly after Fenris sets up Hawke to take the bullet for him, almost getting you murdered by assasins intended for him. He barely apologizes for this before having the gaul to seriously ask you for help like a minute later.

That said, a couple things about Fenris I did like was he's not bad for DPS with the right setup. As far as his origin/storyline I started to like fenris in Act 2. I was able to joke around with him, drink his wine and it seemed we were starting to get along. He ends up going back to his usual crap by Act 3 though as he is pretty much impossible to convince to stop being such a Mage Gustapo. The only reason I was able to get him to fight with me in final battle was because I called him out on his due to me. Basicly implied he was a douche if he would not share death or victory with us after all Hawke, Bethany and other Mages did to help him. He did so reluctantly, not a very impressive companion overall in my book. He had his moments where I thought he was cool but in the end he proved only to be traitorous emosauce.

I liked his character and background even if he has all the tact of a four-year old. His appearance, however, always made me twitch.

Fenris was... not my favorite but I didn't hate him. He was a bit odd looking in my opinion, but I got that vibe from most elves in DA2 (I believe BioWare intentionally made elves look "different" rather than "incredibly attractive human")

I thought his backstory was interesting, as was how it effected his opposing views on ending slavery and controlling mages. Although he's certainly easier to get along with if you play a templar styled character.

As far as jrpg influence, maybe some. But who cares? The style may not be your cup'o'tea but it doesn't make it inherently bad, and if Fenris bothers you, well, you can just not recruit him and you'll never even see him in the game.

I'm not far in to the story yet, but so far I don't like what I see. He treats all my mages like crap because of how ONE mage treated him. God only knows how much he would look down on women if he got caught in one bad relationship. Fenris is infact probably the reason Varric is my favourite character over Merril. While Fenris is usually being a complete tool to party members with little reason, Varric instead is the one telling him things that Hawke just isn't allowed. His voice wasn't what I expected (teenage anime hero) and yet it's still gut-wrenchingly annoying. Awkward on the ears.

I may need to kill Fenris to ensure their's no chance of his appearance in DA3.

Don't like him...he's too whiney. Never takes responsibility for the fact that he was the one that made the choice to become what he became...his sister said he fought for the lyrium markings. Still he blames magic. And the way he drinks...it's like they tried to make him big and bad but he just comes off as a big emo baby feeling sorry for himself. Gave him back to his master on one playthrough....felt very liberating. Now if they would just let me kill Sebastion, Kirkwall would be all rosey.

Well having a few jrpg elements is not surprising, after Bioware announced they were going to do an anime for Dragon Age.

QFT.
Next replay I want to see how bad I can ****** Fenris off ...
And killing him (alas, it took two shots) at the end of my last game was so satisfying!  I was going to one-shot him this time, but I like your idea of giving him back to his master better.

What I like about Fenris is that he is far more intelligent than your average companion. However I can see how that upset some people...

He whines way too much and he never changes in 10 years no matter how nice you are, how many times you save his sorry ass or how much you do for him. He gave Hadriana his word he won't kill her and then does it anyway and stalks off like a wounded child that didn't get his way? Your word is everything, more valuable than currency, and his apparently means nothing Hawke is the one that should be pissed off at that point, not Emo boy. I totally get he was abused and that a mage did it, but get over it already. You sold yourself into slavery to free your mom and sister and yes that is noble, but live with it. You gained your freedom and killed everyone to do it, everyone apparently except Danarius. Unless they kept him chained up at all times, I don't see how they ever held him captive. He has a lot of power and can reach in and grab someone's heart, unless he's in your group that is. Apparently this is a cutscene only power. Those kinds of things make the story lose immersion for me. Don't show me some awesome power in a cut scene that they can't use any other time.

He's a great 2h warrior when specc'ed right but he just isn't needed or necessary with his total whining ungrateful attitude. I don't care how he looks, I judge people by their words and actions. His suck. Hope he doesn't appear in another game. The preceding was all just my opinion. If you loved him, good for you.

I seriously don't get you guys. I hate anime angst BS, and yet I quite liked Fenris. The whole white hair thing makes sense with his lyrium-infused body, his VO is absolutely great, and that anger and the extreme power he has in combat gives him great strength of character. He's not at all unbelievable to me, and he doesn't come off as whiny, annoying or useless as some BW characters have. I honestly hope to see more of his kind in the future.

Also as far as one of my femHawkes is concerned, Fenris is among the first romanceable companions ever that actually feels like a man. Not some whiny "I want to please you, please please let me please have pity on (STFU!)". You don't tell him what to do, most of the time he lives the way he sees fit and isn't shy about his views. Not like those sheep that have come before.

What, like Sten? But I suppose if you really want to find a reason to hate something, you'll come up with a way to find it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to convert everyone into Fenris fangirls. It's okay with me if you don't like his character. In fact, if I look at it from another perspective, I can sorta see why some people won't like him. Maybe he just rubs you the wrong way, and you don't know why, that's fine. Maybe you just can't relate to him, or you disagree with some of his core beliefs, that's fine too. Everyone gets that way about some characters. What I don't understand is a few of the reasons that some people cite for not liking him.

From what I've heard, I think 'he's emo' is the strangest. One of the popular definitions of an 'emo' is someone who grows up in middle-class suburbia with a generally decent life and no more or less problems than others, but still finds a way to complain about it constantly, turn it into hate for the rest of the world and believe that no-one else understands them.

Fenris, however, was a slave. Take a look at our own earth history for a second if you want to see the kind of treatment they received - it was a little worse than high school. Not only that, but he can't remember anything but being a slave. The man he served made sure of this, and it's quite clear he went through mental and emotional abuse. Literally being tied to a leash - imagine the dehumanizing (de-elven-izing?) experience that must have been. Those are the kinds of things Danarius put Fenris - and his other slaves, no doubt - through.

Some say he looks like an anime character, which is another thing I personally don't understand. There are a number of possible reasons for his hair being white - reasons that exist in real life, too. From my minimal experience with it, anime doesn't usually have reasons for white hair, it's just an artistic choice. Some say it's because he carries a huge sword - but all 2-handers in Dragon Age carry huge swords; that's more a complaint about weapon size than character. Others say it's because he's lanky, or has large ears, but again - that's part of the elven redesign, not restricted to the character.

I didn't mean to get into a TL;DR rant there, but those are the two main things I've seen shouted from the rooftops when it comes to Fenris hate that I just don't agree with. I am a Fenris fan, but like I said before, I don't have a problem if anyone else isn't. In fact, I often like when people dislike a character that I love and get into a discussion about them, because it can offer a different perspective on the character that you wouldn't have thought of yourself. I just feel that 'emo' and 'anime' are superficial reasons to dislike Fenris. I get a mental image of people making thoughtless hand-grabby movements at the 'reasons-to-hate-a-character' shelf when I read them.

/rant.

I quite enjoyed Fenris as a character, but I was disappointed by how utterly weak he was when coming up against him in the final battle. I was expecting a tough fight but my DW rogue one-shotted him with assassinate. I probably could've got away with twin fangs...

You know, just because you don't like a character type doesn't mean he was "poorly written." I think Fenris is actually a very well-written character. It takes a long time to really get to know him, but he subtly grow and changes throughout the game. There's complex reasoning behind the way he reacts to mages and treats other people. Is he right for treating mages the way he does? No. But there's a lot of legit trauma in his background that causes him to be suspicious of mages.

Also, you guys obviously need to play more JRPGs if you think all heroes from those games are "emo", brooding and whiny. For every JRPG I've played with a brooding hero, I've played another game where the hero is chipper, outgoing and accepting, or snarky and more interested in getting the job done than brooding on the past, etc. And in the ones I've played that DO feature a brooding hero, the other characters will often mock or get after them for it. (Heck, in The World Ends With You, most of the game's story is the angsty, loner hero being forced to learn how STUPID and wrong he is for behaving that way and pushing others away.) There's sometimes side-characters that are angsty and brooding, but those tend to be rivals of the main character.

Really, there's as wide of a variety of character types in JRPGs as there are in western RPGs. Fenris would fit into a JRPG...but so would Merril, Aveline, Anders, Varric, Bethany, Carver...and Zevran, Alistair, Morrigan, etc. I could probably identify tropes in those characters that also show up in Japanese RPGs and anime for all of those...probably specific characters, too.

That's not to say that Fenris doesn't have any JRPG influences--I wouldn't be surprised--but the assumption that if he's a white-haired, pretty, angsty character he MUST be influenced by them, and that none of the other characters couldn't be, is fairly ignorant.

i never got along with him (story wise), but that ended in him having the (in my way) better rivalry bonus and being and awesome AoE killing machine... for this reason however i didn't took him along when playing as warrior since he would not only kill my mages/ranged rouges but also me when going after everything that moves on hard/nightmare xD

all in all: -i don't like him
-he's still valueable in normal playthoughts
-as long as i'm playing a melee i don't take him along in hard and/or nightmare playthroughs
-> no love for that sucker and still he was right about **** crazy mages who deserve to die in a fire (anders... sucked even more but was also valueable as a heal/support bot and merril took a big place in being responsable for "me" killing her whole clan xD)

I love Fenris.

He's dark and angry :D has a massive sword and is closest the game comes to having an arcane warrior.
