Whenever I see debate about whether DA:O or DA2 has better companions I can't help but think that they both have their great companions. I think overall I might lean towards DA:O, but as soon as I think that I have this rush of anxiety about how much I like and would miss Varric and Merrill. So if you could pick companions from both games, who would make up your ideal party?

There are characters from both which I like very much, and characters from both I could totally do without.

(Disregarding combat effectiveness, and focusing entirely on character/personality/attitude/dialogue)

Varric is a must-have; to me he's up there with HK-47 in terms of memorability and comedic value.

Shale is also a possible given for me--unique, and also funny.

Morrigan is just hot, sarcastic, and abrasive.
Isabela is crude, likes to raz everyone, and is also easy on the eyes.
Merril is naive, slightly curious (as if everything's new), with a hint of innocence.
All of them make me laugh, so these are all contenders.

In contrast, I would be inclined to side with Fenris and Sten simply because they're much more serious-face than the above, and I could imagine some good banter emerging from the mix.

Alistair would be a pinch hitter I suppose, if only because he's so damn goofy, and an easy target for jokes.

My ideal party would consist of more than 4 people.

I'd pick Varric and Merrill from DA2, Anders and Velanna from DA:A and Morrigan and Sten from DA:O.

If these started banter I couldn't move from the spot from laughing.

Morrigan, Alistair, Sten, Leliana, Varric, Isabela, Merrill, Bethany, to equal the total party numbers for DA:O (minus Dog, but he's a given, right?). Nathaniel would be the pinch hitter in the lineup.

That's a pretty good game balance, I think, and I could also have a three-mage party while playing a warrior myself, so there's always that.

Downside is that I'd be running the risk of dying of laughter before finishing this hypothetical game. There's far too much potential comedic gold in some of those interactions to be healthy.

Leliana, Isabela, Merrill, Sten, Sebastien, Varric.

Hmm and Fenris just so I can have another warrior.

So how many people can we pick??? I'm going to pick 8 characters in total. Two full parties and an extra, and the main character.

The Warden (hypothetical, so I can pick him), DA:O Zeveran, Morrigan, Varric, Nathaniel Howe, Alistair, Fenris, and Carver.

So that's 2 mages (including the Warden), 3 rogues, and 3 warriors. This team could handle any situation, without a doubt. I think Hawke could have been added, but I decided to take one PC or the other... no point in making him the Warden's subordinate.

This topic is a pleasant change from all the endless gushing praise or bitter complaining (of which I've also been part of).

Edit:  Let me just add that both Zevran and Alistair use dual wield... um... and that the Warden is AW/Blood Mage, Morrigan AW

Solely on personalities? Varric, Morrigan, Alistair, Merrill, pre-Justice Anders, Aveline, and Shale.
