 I'm one of the guys that likes to play a Mage, but hates wearing robes. I still can't believe my character hasn't been arrested by the Templiers yet. 

So is there a list of robes what aren't actual robes? Like your default costume, and the Champion costume?

Off the top of my head, the armor from the Raiders on the Cliff quest at the Wounded Coast in Act 2. Some armors from the Mage Goods store in the Gallows has some (ironic they sell items to make you not look like a mage at the mage prison).

Beyond that, beats me.

The Battlemage Armaments are one option, but as I recall they can't be bought until ACT3, by which point you can acquire the pieces of the champion outfit. But I really can't recall much mage armor what didn't look like robes.

Pirate Lords Robes or something along those lines from Act2 looks like your starting gear.
