I'm one of the guys that likes to play a Mage, but hates wearing robes. I still can't believe my character hasn't been arrested by the Templiers yet.
So is there a list of robes what aren't actual robes? Like your default costume, and the Champion costume?

These are the ones I've found:
The two robes you get for joining the mercenaries or the smugglers.
Heavy Velvet Robes
Robe of the Notorious Pirate
Saarebas Robes (I think that's the name, anyway)
Robes of the Champion
If anyone knows more, I'd love to know. I too dislike robes immensely, and I constantly stuck with poor quality equipment just to compensate for this.

Saarebas Robes?
...need to google that and find them. I hope they have those head-collar things.

In he second act you get attacked by a mage pirate at the wounded coast he has notorious pirate robes.
I wore them through the whole game they look like a swashbuckly outfit.

No, they're just a re-use of the Apostate Robes you start the game in, but with better stats. I forget their actual name (it's something Qunari-ish), but I believe you stumble across them on the Shepherding Wolves quest. I'm replaying a mage this weekend, so I'll keep my eyes out for them and post their actual names.

The Mage Goods store in the Gallows has some mage armor later on in the game (think it costs around 10 sovereigns)

I got some non magey looking mage robes off of demon Sophia Dryden actually at wounded coast. I was surprised to see her. (I used the "evil mage warden" import on that playthrough where I actually took her deal at Warden's Keep.)

Here is what I end up doing. I use a save game editor and I change the resref for the item to make it look like something else. Then my Mage runs around with a bad ass Pudao (staff of parthanon) in armor. Sweetness.

DCUO did a great thing at this - any armor you equip you can keep the look!

I only briefly had mage robes on (when I was wearing Robes of the Spiral Eye). The rest of the time I had the smuggler's outfit, the Free Adept Robes (which made me look like the Gorton's Fisherman), the pirate outfit (but I don't want to be a pirate) and finally the Champion "robes".

What a coincidence! I chose that one too!
Yeah, I don't like how the upper arm is covered but at least they have good stats for act 1, 98 armor is better than anything else in the act for Willpower and Magic reqs.
Have to look out for the pirate one, the strategy guide doesn't list that one or the Sophia Dryden armor which upsets me.

Vain, it's a brown version of the Robe of the Notorious Pirate that you can get in the Ferelden imports shop during Act 2.

To be honest, they should just make the clothing system same as Mass Effect 2. Where you can patch up armor parts on your character and then color it up. That would be awesome.

I just found a Battlemage outfit in the Gallows during Act3 from the mage's store. I think it costs 10gp but I like it better than the darn robes they recycle with different names. I'm wearing it until I can equip the Champion armor (which will be soon).

Once I got the Robe of the Notorious Pirate I didn't wear anything else until Champion gear. Tight leather looks good on lady Hawke.
