So in "canon" Hawke is male?

I tried playing Hawke, and I instantly thought how horrible and bland he was. His voice acting seemed pretty bad, his relationship with his mother and sister seemed just weird, his "funny" response was ridiculously voiced.
I then tried it as a female, just to make the game more bareable, and honestly I'm falling in love with her. The voice is spot on, all responses seem to work, the relationship with Bethany seems tighter (they say the same things, but it seems better as a sister-sister relationship).
Honestly it seems to me like it was intended for Hawke to be a female in honesty. It may just be that I hate the male voice actor, but even the relationships seem better with Hawke as a female.
Anyone else agree?

Nope.avi
Edit: To clarify, I thought whoever voiced Fem-Hawk was pretty terrible. I cringed every time she spoke.

It's just my opinion.
I also agree that the Bethany relation works better as sisters.
So does the Carver relation imo. The little brother jealous of his big sister thing is wonderful.

I never tried a female Shepard and I never will because my Shepard is set in stone right down to the awesome haircut he has :-D
But yeah, I don't know what it was about Male Hawke. I just hated him from the off. His look (all male looks), his voice, the way he spoke, the interactions with his family.
Where as female Hawke.. completely the opposite. After I customised her face and hair, She's fine. Made the game a lot more fun for me switching.

I really loved being a protective big brother, so I have to disagree (got a younger sister RL, maybe that's why).
Usually played as a good natured Hawke, but when Bethany was in trouble I picked the Agressive options, and boy, it felt good.
Stupid Grace.

Works just as well as a big-sister, but it's a question of taste I guess.

The male VO sounds very menacing (it's Vaughan afterall). I can't imagine the female one has the same effect.

No.
If anything, I felt that Dude Hawke's voice acting(Nicholas Boulton) was top notch and especially had the edge over Lady Hawke with his sarcastic and aggresive lines.
Don't get me wrong, I honestly think that Jo Wyatt did a good job, but I just can't get that "posh voice impression" out of my head whenever I hear her.
Sorry Jo, Nick was in Arn: The Knight Templar too!
I've also seen some people comparing(as a derogatory) Boulton to Mark Meer which is just beyond me.
Ugh, I swear that some guys are hatin' on the male protagonists just for the sake of it.

Kind of like how there is no canon Baldur's Gate story. (The book was never made. Never!) Sure, the game made it easy to start as if you were with Minsc & Jaheira, but if they weren't in your party, then it's easy to just leave those two other strange prisoners behind while you escaped.
Oh, and a non-white friend was... amused when Varric's first tale of his beautiful, dark Hawke was white. Well, I was amused at his ranting. Apparently that's the preferred version of Hawke's story. Ha.

There is very little canon.
I would have agreed with that if they hadn't forced diffrent endings on some of my companions from the first game.

I really dislike MaleShep, his VO grates my nerves so bad, and I had trouble finishing my MaleSheps playthrough because of it.
But I really like MaleHawke, and have enjoyed my MaleHawke mage so far because of it.
Though my LadyHawke will be my main. XD

By contrast, Hawkette sounds much more cohesive but at the expense of some intensity.
Also... brah, you're missing out with FemShep. Jennifer Hale knocked that one out of the park - particularly as a renegade. She's a nut busting, jaw breaking, head crushing dont-take-no-crap badass mutha. I loooooves me some FemShep.

And I only heard the male voice actor in english but I think he isn't that good for various reasons. First, he seems to have a rather monoton voice and second has way to much accent.

Female Hawke has a great actress, im not a big fan of voiced hero's, but I am pleasently surprised with her acting.

The one thing I always wonder about voice acting. How do they do the "agonizing pain" sound?

The only exception being a spin off, in KOTOR 2 which was made by Obsidian.
