So in "canon" Hawke is male?

I never ever play female characters, ever.   I could not even imagine a female Commander Shepard, mine is a bad man with a beard.  But anyway I digress..

I tried playing Hawke, and I instantly thought how horrible and bland he was.  His voice acting seemed pretty bad, his relationship with his mother and sister seemed just weird, his "funny" response was ridiculously voiced.

I then tried it as a female, just to make the game more bareable, and honestly I'm falling in love with her.  The voice is spot on, all responses seem to work, the relationship with Bethany seems tighter (they say the same things, but it seems better as a sister-sister relationship).

Honestly it seems to me like it was intended for Hawke to be a female in honesty.  It may just be that I hate the male voice actor, but even the relationships seem better with Hawke as a female.

Anyone else agree?

Nope.avi

Edit: To clarify, I thought whoever voiced Fem-Hawk was pretty terrible. I cringed every time she spoke.:(

Both Shepard and Hawke has better female voices imo.
It's just my opinion.

I also agree that the Bethany relation works better as sisters.
So does the Carver relation imo. The little brother jealous of his big sister thing is wonderful.

...Bland? His VA is very good. I noticed nothing better or worse when I played FemHawke.

I never tried a female Shepard and I never will because my Shepard is set in stone right down to the awesome haircut he has :-D

But yeah, I don't know what it was about Male Hawke.  I just hated him from the off.  His look (all male looks), his voice, the way he spoke, the interactions with his family.

Where as female Hawke.. completely the opposite.  After I customised her face and hair, She's fine.  Made the game a lot more fun for me switching.

I really loved being a protective big brother, so I have to disagree (got a younger sister RL, maybe that's why).

Usually played as a good natured Hawke, but when Bethany was in trouble I picked the Agressive options, and boy, it felt good.

Stupid Grace.

Works just as well as a big-sister, but it's a question of taste I guess.

The male VO sounds very menacing (it's Vaughan afterall). I can't imagine the female one has the same effect.

No.

If anything, I felt that Dude Hawke's voice acting(Nicholas Boulton) was top notch and especially had the edge over Lady Hawke with his sarcastic and aggresive lines.
Don't get me wrong, I honestly think that Jo Wyatt did a good job, but I just can't get that "posh voice impression" out of my head whenever I hear her.

Sorry Jo, Nick was in Arn: The Knight Templar too!

I've also seen some people comparing(as a derogatory) Boulton to Mark Meer which is just beyond me.
Ugh, I swear that some guys are hatin' on the male protagonists just for the sake of it.

I loved both of the VAs for DA2. Though I tend to think the female VA doing the suave dialogue actions and the male VA doing the direct/meany dialogue choices to be their strong sides. =)

Based on the statue that appears later in the game, and the pictures in Varric's book/the cutscenes, I'd say yes. Just as 'default' Warden seems to be Human Noble. But Hawke will always be a Ladyhawke for me.

There is no canon Hawke. Just a default Hawke.

Kind of like how there is no canon Baldur's Gate story. (The book was never made. Never!) Sure, the game made it easy to start as if you were with Minsc & Jaheira, but if they weren't in your party, then it's easy to just leave those two other strange prisoners behind while you escaped.

Oh, and a non-white friend was... amused when Varric's first tale of his beautiful, dark Hawke was white. Well, I was amused at his ranting. Apparently that's the preferred version of Hawke's story. Ha.

I would have agreed with that if they hadn't forced diffrent endings on some of my companions from the first game.

Both Hawke and Shepard have better female voice actors in my opinion, not that the male actors are bad per se, but the females are better. But then I might be a little biased as I almost always play female characters

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the acting of the male Hawke, given that I don't prefer voiced PCs. While I'd rather provide the voice myself, if I had to have a voice, his was just right. I wish they hadn't shown conversations from the third person and had a dialogue wheel, but I enjoyed the voice work very much. I preferred it to the female, not because there was anything wrong with the acting, but because I found the female voice less appropriate for the Hawke I wanted to play. Because of that and the run, I played male.

I actually really like the VO for both male and lady Hawke.

I really dislike MaleShep, his VO grates my nerves so bad, and I had trouble finishing my MaleSheps playthrough because of it.

But I really like MaleHawke, and have enjoyed my MaleHawke mage so far because of it.

Though my LadyHawke will be my main. XD

Of the two, I prefer ManHawke (Malehawke? Just Hawke?) but they both did pretty good. He has some awesome delivery and feel, my only complaint is that because there's so much emotion in his lines if you start jumping around the wheel (aggressive response, friendly response, etc) he sounds a little bat**** loco. :P
By contrast, Hawkette sounds much more cohesive but at the expense of some intensity.

Also... brah, you're missing out with FemShep. Jennifer Hale knocked that one out of the park - particularly as a renegade. She's a nut busting, jaw breaking, head crushing dont-take-no-crap badass mutha. I loooooves me some FemShep. :D

Well in german I think the voice actress for female Hawke is too soft spoken as too choose anything besides the nice options. The male voice actor seems to be able to deliver more variaty, but he seems to resort to shouting when choosing the brutal or undiplomatic choices.
And I only heard the male voice actor in english but I think he isn't that good for various reasons. First, he seems to have a rather monoton voice and second has way to much accent.

Male Hawke has a really bad Voice actor, I cant bear to play as him.

Female Hawke has a great actress, im not a big fan of voiced hero's, but I am pleasently surprised with her acting.

I like both male and female Hawke's voices, though female Hawke's voice has more interesting layers. She can sound naughty and posh half the time and suddenly turn cold and steely in a heartbeat.

I haven't tried the womanzhawk yet. I like the manhawk though, he sounds manly and stuff >_>.

The one thing I always wonder about voice acting. How do they do the "agonizing pain" sound?

If I'm not mistaken, all Bioware "canon" characters are male, unfortunately. =/
The only exception being a spin off, in KOTOR 2 which was made by Obsidian.
