Based on what I've read in the forums, I might have missed the chance to do Leliana's quest.
Her approval is up over 65%, and I am given the dialog option to romance her ("what's a girl like you doing in the Chantry?"), but can't seem to get the "Bards are Spies" dialog.

I've put a lot of time in this play through, and really don't want to start again.

Here are my questions:
1. About when in the game should I get the "bards are spies" dialog?
2. When should we get ambushed by the hit squad out for her?
3. Is there a way to correct my dialog problem using the console or game editor? I'm looking for a way to correct this without restarting.

I'm not sure what you mean by 65 per cent approval. But if you haven't given her too many gifts, you should be OK.

Nonetheless, you should be able to ask her "What's a girl like you …" the first time you go to camp. The next time you speak to her, the dialogue option "I've heard that minstrels in Orlais are often spies" should come up. Choose that option, and the next time you return to camp, Leliana will confess that she lied to you about her past as a bard. When you've finished conversation, the next time you travel on the world map (provided it doesn't coincide with another scripted encounter) will have you fight the assassins that Marjolaine sends after her.

If you want advice with the game editor, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for another response. I'm on the XBox 360.

What do you do if I didn't choose that dialoge option? Is it possible for me to finish her quest? When I talk to her all I get the option to ask is do you have any stories. I know I was offered the choice before but I don't think I clicked on it because I was never attacked.

Well, the best I can advise is to use my mod, ZDF dialog fix, or at the bare minimum, Leliana Fixes (which just fixes Leliana's dialog file) if on a PC. It does fix the issue, and you do not have to start over.

Edit: The other altermative would be to use the console, and turn off Leliana's romance flag, get her personal quest, then turn the romance flag back on.

The command for this is: runscript zz_app_debug .  Select Leliana, romance flags, and set her to dumped.  Then after her quest (you will get a dialog from her about the dumping, sorry), run it again, and set her romance again to active.

When I put runscript zz_app_debug it says the file doesn't exist. How do I get to Leliana Fixes? I can't download the mod cause the filesize is to large.

You should be able to download if you register -- it's free to register.  Leliana's Fixes is here.  However, it doesn't fix nearly as much as ZDF does.  Make sure you follow the instructions in the readme -- they're pretty clear, but you can only install ONE version of the mod (there are two in the archive -- one is Dialog Tweaks compatible and the other is not).

You do have to enable the console to use the console.  I think that's where you had problems with the command.

I downloaded the patch but where do I extract it too? In packages there is no folder that says overide

Just create a folder named override and extract the proper version of the mod into it.  My guess is you're not using dialog tweaks, so use the non-dialog tweaks version.

Ok so I installed the Lelina fixes but what do I do now? When I talk to her, I still don't get any new dialog option except about her stories. You said I would get a break up sequence and I didn't so I'm obviously doing something wrong. How do I get it so I can get her quest?

No, I didn't say you'd get a breakup sequence -- I told you to break up with her via the console if you didn't want to use a mod. What is her approval? Are you sure the mod is installed correctly? It fixes her dialog, and provided you're at high enough approval, you should be able to ask her about spies. Try traveling around the map with her.
