Well, considering how quick he is to respond to flirting after that quest and how he says they haven't seen each other in a long time, they couldn't have been that serious about it. I got the impression that whatever they had ended long time ago, now they're just friends.

The first flirt line? He's actually very melancholy about it (at least to f!Hawke) and also says that he's been sending letters to him (Karl) until one day, the letters stopped coming. That's when the templars held Karl captive and made him tranquil to lure Anders into their trap. They knew how important he was to him. Sure enough, Anders took the bait and unleashed his anger on them. I just thought their relationship went way deeper than "friends with benefits".

I got the impression that while Karl wasn't Anders's one twoo wub, he was someone he cared for deeply and had a deep emotional relationship with, even if it wasn't 'let's run away and have little apostate kitties!' sort of love.

Well, the indentured servitude of feudal Europe was relatively free when compared to the slavery of America and places like the Ancient World. Servants were property - that's true, but to harm someone's property was a terrible offense and Lords were actually quite protective of their property. Also - more children meant more workers in the fields for European landowners (and someone else to carry on the parents debt) - while for slaveholders it was another mouth to feed (though it could be good meat for the markets - but that wouldn't apply to mages). Waiting 10 years for the child to become a viable worker wasn't cost effective.

As for love - you can't stop people from falling in love, but if it was actively permitted - then I think that's definitely not slavery. Love was a form of power amongst slaves - and while it was probably permitted amongst slaves considers pacified - if you gave any trouble to the slave owner you wouldn't endanger just yourself - but your lover (if they knew about it).

Anders does reference this a bit - it's contradictory to all the other things he says about free love in the towers. It's likely that for someone like Anders - Karl could be used against him because he was a radical freedom fighter. That's hardly the working of a tyrant if you possess even a rudimentary understanding of how political systems have worked throughout the ages. Anders is an enemy of the state - Karl is a lover, and therefore an accomplice. The state generally does not hold bohemian values in high regard.

They were lovers at one time, but it broke off for some reason. They weren't together anymore but they were still close friends by DA2's events.

That's all there is to it.

a gay virgin is different from a regular virgin how....?

i mean, by whatever definition, technically that means a chick could lose her virginity twice?

you've either had sex or you haven't imo....

Er, it's not exactly actively permitted. You can get in trouble. Mages need permission to marry. If you romance Anders (at least with friendship) he talks about how falling in love is a bit dangerous because it gives templars a hold on you- and how falling in love is the rule he will cherish breaking the most before the scene cuts to the watered down romp. Mages aren't exactly given free reign over what they can do. Sex is included.
