I walked into a rivalry romance with Merrill - mostly because my character is incorrigible and flirts with everyone - and the parts of it I saw I liked a lot better than the friend romance with the same character. YMMV.
How did it differ?

It's hard to explain as I really only saw the pre-sex (in the foyer) and post-sex (in bed after) parts.
In the Rivalmance, Merrill comes by to apologize for being angry at you earlier and saying mean things (like, "Get out, I never want to see you again!"). You can respond a number of ways, including that you give her so much trouble because you care. Then after sex she seems kind of confused as to how what happened just happened.
In the Friendmance, it's a little too much "clingly trooo wuv" for my tastes.

Bear in mind if you want to see the romance out to the end this way then you would need full rivalry by the end of the game, not just settle for 50% and the Estate scene.

Well thats awesome that they have diffrent feels to them then, I may have to try it some time, though I heard if Isabella isnt at a certain friendship with you she leaves party.

In the Friendmance, it's more, "I love you." "I love you too." "Okay, good."

I think she might just have to feel very strongly one way or the other - I'm not sure about that though. It would make sense in either context, really.
The idea is, in the situation that comes up, if she doesn't have strong feelings for the protagonist of any kind it would absolutely make sense for her at that point to bail.

I've done both Friend and Rival romance for Merrill, and I can confirm that the Rivalmance is far more interesting. She blows up at you, you fight, make up, she begs you, "Don't try to save me, Hawke..." It's a very emotional series of scenes.
In the Friendmance, it's more, "I love you." "I love you too." "Okay, good."
That's a good way of putting it.

It's friendship or rivalry. She just has to feel very strongly, one way or another.

Oh thank god, I was afraid to ****** her off when I play again because I don't want my rouge jumping ship.

Of course not, how else would you give your cheeks that rosy glow?

I'll have to try the rivalmance.. not really sure how to get Isabella to hate me though. She seems pretty easy going. heh
Tip 1:
When given the option, turn down money rewards for quests, and/or don't demand money or offer bribes. She is very money-saavy.
Tip 2:
Agree with Aveline on everything else. They are almost polar opposites in terms of their stance on law and order and whatnot. It's a safe bet that if Aveline likes something, it will ****** off Isabela. And vice versa.

I tried romancing her on my first playthrough and it was weird, some seemed to think we were in a relationship but I didn't unlock her alternative outfit and other dialogue seemed to suggest they were just good friends? She didn't have a problem with me going off and romancing Merrill either, in fact it came up in dialogue both with her, her and Varric bantering and elsewhere.
The guide could be wrong though, they so often are, although it's seemed pretty good so far.

But I can't really compare it as I've yet to enter into a friendship-based romance.
