Fenris and Merrill have alternate costumes for romancing them. (Fenris's is very subtle, however)
Isabela's alternate costume unlocks if you respec her using the Maker's Sigh potion at the Black Emporium.
Anders's alternate costume unlocks automatically in Act 3 if you have a certain level of friendship/rivalry.

I find it really hard to gain freindship ooints early in the game - I keep accumulating rivalry points that sends the meter back to neutral again! I did manage to successfully romance Anders and now aiming for Fenris but am not sure if friendship or rivalry is my best bet? I'm trying to be pro-Templars even though I'm a mage.

My male rogue is in a rivalry romance with Merril right now and I just know it's not going to end well... I know exactly what she's up to. She's lucky she's so cute.

Good luck with that. Fenris will dislike you for being a mage, but like you for siding with the templars. It's a major pain to get him 100% in either direction like that.

Hmm...should I go for Sebastian when he comes in properly instead?

Sebastian can only be romanced if you've NEVER flirted with another party member, EVER. Also, you have to be female. Also, your relationship will be chaste. Sorry, he's a priest.
But otherwise, yeah. He's also pro-templar, but not necessarily anti-mage. You can also get a bonus +10 Friendly with him just by asking the Grand Mother for her blessing while he's in the party.

I knew most of that from what I've read here but does that mean I can't romance Sebastian even though I flirted with Fenris and once Anders BEFORE I even met Sebastian? If so I will have to stick with Fenris or restart! Thankfully I'm still in act 1.

I did this with my mage Lady Hawke. I like it way more than a friendly romance with Anders (which I did during my first play through).
They get mad at eachother constantly. I would imagine there is lots and lots of tension. At the end of the day, they respect and care about one another. I was worried it would be a shallow romance...but it really isn't.
Just make sure to rack up the rivalry points. It's pretty easy if you're a mage and side with the mages. What I like is that towards the end you can use the "nice" dialogue options without it affecting the romance. I feel like at that point they've been together for awhile so they probably aren't always mean and snarky. I love some of the things Fenris says during the end portion of Act III if he's your Hawke's LI!
Anyway, I highly recommend going the rivalry route with Fenris. Very well done!
