There's a certain amount of overlap between the two, naturally. I'm going to play one variety of mage or another first time through -- always do if given the option -- and my mages all tend to be of the "gimme as much power as I can get" variety, which dovetails nicely with my more powergamerish tendencies.
So... yes. And no. As always. Just how much roleplaying goes on will depend on the games and how much inspiration I find in there for such roleplaying.

However, on the topic of lore..i guess most of the lore-spoilers so far count as common knowledge for any Fereldan. It's another story with the info on companions, though, but theres not much we can do about it. I'll try to handle Morrigan like the dangerous apostate she appears to be, not like 'the awesome killer witch and romanceable i saw in the trailers'.

I would say learning the lore, especially for a Dalish elf (who live to collect lore and lost culture) would be essential to RPing a character. It's not like the other characters in the world don't know the lore. If you go in blind, someone will talk about the Exalted March against the Dales and your Dalish Elf will have a blank look when s/he should know about it.
>< Sorry, I meant to say that I am only allowing myself to know what my character would know, I'll read up on Dalish Elven history and whatnot, but not read the books or anything, at least not until later.

I'm having 5 characters atm, all with their own personality, so I should be having 5 completely different experiences. That is, if I can keep to my RP-character, which might be hard sometimes (especially when I'm going to play the evil guy)

I wonder who's NOT going to roleplay. Since this is a Role Playing Game.

lol "Sure, I'll save you from the Darkspawn...but only so I can kill you all later. Noone intrudes on my territory!"

My first character is going to be 'justice for all' (yes, Metallica reference intended). Then I got my death-to-the-smelly-humans Dalish Elven rogue. Then an over-proud Dwarven templar and a hippie (make love, not war!) mage. And then there is the super-evil mage.

Which does make contributing to a lot of conversations difficult as almost every answer is "I'll make the decision according to what my character has experienced at that point."

Even if you start the game with a specific mindset for your character, you are still going to be presented with choices that are immutable and possibly at odds with the characters personality.
If this was a mmorpg where one could write his own role-playing on a chat window, then yes the question would make sense, as it is... it doesn't.

ROLE-PLAY: I prefer to play good characters. I also try to be consistent with my character as far as how they behave/react. I will also allow the story and events to SHAPE my character. For example, it looks like in the Dalish Elf origin that humans help them, so if I'm playing good then an act of kindness may soften my outsider mindset.

The one I really got a kick out of was Fable, where if you played "pure" good, your character was surrounded by butterflies, and if you played "pure" evil it was flies instead...
