Personally, I'm very excited to have a new world to explore through Dragon Age. I'll be playing a Dalish Elf, and I'll be RPing him as a being very much an outsider. As such, I am not reading any of the lore, and I'll be absorbing all of it as my character sees it to get the most genuine experience. Is anyone else planning on RPing their character(s)?

Not really I guess. Ill just do what I would do, the first time anyway. Which is usually neutral/goodish and on the next playthroughs I just try to experience as many alternate story paths I can rather than RP a certain way.

My responses will be based on the origin path I choose. As a human noble, I'll be suitably pompous and self-serving. When I play one of the other origin paths, my general attitude will reflect the applicable origin mind set, so, "Yes", I'll be RP'ing

Hopefully with the draw of the atmosphere of this game, how could you not?

First time I'll probably be an achievement ****, second and further playthroughs I will be role-playing. (I'll still be RP'ing in the 1st, but I won't hesitate to do things my characters shouldn't do.)

As always, I'll roleplay... to a degree... on my first time through. I'll come up with a character concept when I create my character, but then I'll see if there are any avenues open to explore that concept. If there are, and they don't seen like they'll lead me into any unfortunate sinkholes, I'll take them. If not, I'll revert to my more analytic gamer tendencies, which involve getting the most bang for my click. The biggest rewards, the coolest weapons, the most powerful spells, hitting every part of every area, completing everything that I possibly can on my way toward "the perfect run".

There's a certain amount of overlap between the two, naturally. I'm going to play one variety of mage or another first time through -- always do if given the option -- and my mages all tend to be of the "gimme as much power as I can get" variety, which dovetails nicely with my more powergamerish tendencies.

So... yes. And no. As always. Just how much roleplaying goes on will depend on the games and how much inspiration I find in there for such roleplaying.

I would say learning the lore, especially for a Dalish elf (who live to collect lore and lost culture) would be essential to RPing a character. It's not like the other characters in the world don't know the lore. If you go in blind, someone will talk about the Exalted March against the Dales and your Dalish Elf will have a blank look when s/he should know about it.

Why, yes. It's an rpg after all.

However, on the topic of lore..i guess most of the lore-spoilers so far count as common knowledge for any Fereldan. It's another story with the info on companions, though, but theres not much we can do about it. I'll try to handle Morrigan like the dangerous apostate she appears to be, not like 'the awesome killer witch and romanceable i saw in the trailers'.

>< Sorry, I meant to say that I am only allowing myself to know what my character would know, I'll read up on Dalish Elven history and whatnot, but not read the books or anything, at least not until later.

Yes, my first playthrough will probably be a female city elf. I think that's a fairly easy origin to roleplay as long as you don't mind being a bit of an ass to humans whenever you can get away with it (and killing any racist humans who give you an excuse.) I'm quite looking forward to it. And maybe my human party members will be decent enough that I might lose some of my human hatred. Maybe.

Deciding at the start whether my character will be a nice guy or an ***hole is pretty much the extent of my RPing.

I wonder who's NOT going to roleplay. Since this is a Role Playing Game.

I'm having 5 characters atm, all with their own personality, so I should be having 5 completely different experiences. That is, if I can keep to my RP-character, which might be hard sometimes (especially when I'm going to play the evil guy)

lol "Sure, I'll save you from the Darkspawn...but only so I can kill you all later. Noone intrudes on my territory!"

Yea, something like that. Going to be hard, since I don't like to slay the innocent. But it has to be done, for the sake of the game!

Should be interesting. My character is gonna have OCPD, and start with a major hatred for humans. He will be lawful good, but he's pissed after what the humans did to them.

Well, the super-evil mage is going to be the 5th, since I usually find those super evil the least interesting.

My first character is going to be 'justice for all' (yes, Metallica reference intended). Then I got my death-to-the-smelly-humans Dalish Elven rogue. Then an over-proud Dwarven templar and a hippie (make love, not war!) mage. And then there is the super-evil mage.

I mostly make characters, or at least the first few, based on how I 'personally' would solve the problems. So I will RP my first character much like... 'myself in the Dragon Age universe'. So to speak. Choices my character would not make, I won't make until further playthroughs.

Definitely. As rich as the story sounds, I reckon a good part of the game would be lost if you just wanted to min-max your way through it. For that reason, I'm trying to avoid all spoilers (I haven't even looked at the "who do you want in your party" etc. threads), as I want my first play-through to be as "pure" as possible.

Which does make contributing to a lot of conversations difficult as almost every answer is "I'll make the decision according to what my character has experienced at that point." :)

I can't keep from rping in these games, not that I would ever try not to mind you. This game looks like it will be ripe for it, I'm a little concerned about them forcing one side on you at one point, and not letting you side with a certain someone, but other than that, looks pretty open for a lot of decision and rp moments.

I shall indeed be roleplaying; I've got five different characters of my own (and one for side-by-side play with the wife).

Considering the OP... is there a way to play a single player RPG without role playing your character? Every response is pre-written, you cant introduce any personal touch to the way you play your character beyond the choices Bioware gives you.

Even if you start the game with a specific mindset for your character, you are still going to be presented with choices that are immutable and possibly at odds with the characters personality.

If this was a mmorpg where one could write his own role-playing on a chat window, then yes the question would make sense, as it is... it doesn't.

LORE: I think the Origins Story Segments will be designed to give players the lore applicable to their character.

ROLE-PLAY: I prefer to play good characters. I also try to be consistent with my character as far as how they behave/react. I will also allow the story and events to SHAPE my character. For example, it looks like in the Dalish Elf origin that humans help them, so if I'm playing good then an act of kindness may soften my outsider mindset. :)

I don't think avoiding lore makes much sense. I know the origin story will help out to get you started on the path for RPing but still the more you know about the world the better you will be at knowing how you would really RP it. You would have to assume that at the age of the characters you are starting they would have a good concept of at least their own history so I would go and read the history page for your own race on the Wiki. But that is just me. I get as a Dalish (op) you may not know much of the outside but you would know all about your own race and probably more than there will be in the Origin Story. Just my opinion though.

I usually play as good(ish) on the first run-though of a game, as a lot of them are either subtly or blatantly balanced that way... then for variety go back and try the other ways on subsequent playthroughs.

The one I really got a kick out of was Fable, where if you played "pure" good, your character was surrounded by butterflies, and if you played "pure" evil it was flies instead...

No. I have no intentions of Roleplaying in a roleplaying game.
