after reviewing the codex on my second playthrough, i interpreted, quite insanely,  that the dwarves were decendents of the profane, who were somehow connected to the old gods, perhaps even sealed away with them (which would explain why they so desperately tryed to escape and ended up feeding on the old gods). perhaps the mages were never cast down, perhaps the darkspawn were never cursed but diseased by eatting the old gods. maybe the raw lyrium drove them to this, always whispering. perhaps it corrupted the old gods themselves, poisoning them. maybe the profane and rock waiths are the spirits trapped in the deep roads, and they eat lyrium in order to gain the power to return to the fade.
