I have to say, I was pretty disgusted by Ander's behavior.

I got up to Act 3 using 2h Warrior Hawke, Merrill, Varric, and Anders. I've been pursuing a full friendship with each companion so far and I was pretty much aware not all of them got along perfectly such as Isabella with Aveline and Fenris with both Anders and Merrill.

I went along with the game pursuing a romance with Anders. Once I got to Act 2, his constant insults, remarks, and rude attitude towards Merrill began grating on me. When I got to Act 3 and at the conclusion of Fenris' quest, I was absolutely disgusted by Anders. The dialogue went something like this:

Fenris: I'm all alone.
Hawke: You're not alone. You have friends.
Anders: Well, they certainly don't include me.

Just... wow. I'm honestly regretting ever romancing him. Even so, I can't even bring myself to kill him when the time comes. Fenris seems to exhibit a similar attitude so he's not really an option. I guess my next ManHawke will have to be celibate or I'll just make a FemHawke and romance Merrill.

Anders and Fenris hate each other pretty much no matter what.

You mentioned Isabella and Aveline not getting along, in Chapter 3, they actually have very friendly banter, with Aveline asking Isabella why she didn't show up at her Solstice party and such. For a laugh, I highly recommend having Isabella along for the entirity of Aveline's "Long Road" quest in Chapter 2.

If you treat people bad, they might not want to be your friends.

That being said, I probably wouldn't voice that opinion when someone's having an existential crisis either. And has magic hands that rip people's hearts out.

If you chose to sell Fenris to Danarius, Anders reacts happily and says he thought he was the only one thinking that.

Anders is a pretty disgusting human being imo

It's true that Anders does take a particularly unforgiving stance when it comes to Fenris in that Act 3 quest. Fenris takes an equally unforgiving stance about Anders at other points in Act 3, though. And they are both completely without mercy in the aftermath of Merrill's personal quest in Act 3; both condemn her, Fenris going so far as to express his disappointment that someone as honorable as Keeper Marethari would die, allowing Merrill to live.

The interesting thing is, they don't start out with these opinions in such stark relief; though Fenris and Anders don't like each other much from the moment they meet, and clearly make no bones about it, it's only in Act 3 where their dislike has turned to something a bit uglier over time, on both parts, and certainly more personal. Same with Merrill, and all the other companions, really. For example, Anders and Fenris are quick to tell Merrill about the error of her ways in Act 1, but I've found it's in more general terms. By Act 3, their reactions have become a lot more personal, since so much time has passed.

I wouldn't agree with the way Anders behaves in that Fenris quest, to be sure, but it's not really a simple issue by a long shot, and it's also one of the elements of character development and party relationship development I really appreciate about the game.

Anders is really just starting to grate on my nerves. What a selfish, annoying, and unpleasant human being he is.

Eh, you think Fenris would be any kinder if Hawke chose to dump Anders in the lap of the templars pre-end game?

They're douches to one another because they espouse very different points of view, and they're douches to Merril because she goes to another extreme. The only person who seems generally nice (as in, not cold and pathological) to everyone is Varric. Well, and Aveline, and even then she's extremely rude to Isabela for a lot of the game.

Anyone can be given the right circumstances.

Anders actually gets nasty towards everyone at the end, not just Fenris. Most fans agree it's his 'other half' talking more than him, by the time act 3 rolls around. He purposely lashes out at the majority of the other companions, if not in cutscenes then in banters.

Anders is my favorite character in DA2, but even I would have to admit that his insults to other companions are rude and petty. If you put him with Isabela, he mocks her for sleeping with everybody and if Merrill is with him, he cruelly belittles her for succumbing to blood magic. It's disheartening to see him stoop so low like that.

Huh, Anders certainly did that in my first playhthrough, but to my surprise, the second time I did Merril's quest (I'm on playthrough three already, I need help), Fenris didn't say anything at all.

In my second playthrough, there were two instances of this. The first go-round, Anders says the world is poorer for having Merrill in it (instead of Marethari); Fenris replies that for once, they're in agreement. I also believes there's a party banter between Fenris and Merill later on in which he mentions it further.

Yeah Fenris is pretty brutal to Merrill, at times his banter with her seemed much harsher even than his with Anders. Anders is always going to be antagonistic to Fenris and visa versa, they have had years and years for their hatred of each other and what they believe in to fester afterall.

As stated, they are both ugly towards one another. Im actually a bit surprised at the inconsistency of 'justice/vengeance' condoning enslavement should you surrender Fenris to Denarius. I can only guess that at that point it is merely more proof of how off-kilter and maddened Anders has become.

But to be fair Fenris is equally vile towards Anders/Merrill and mages in general.

God yes. When Fenris called Merrill a monster I wanted to reach through the screen and backhand him. What a messed up thing to say to someone when they're already suffering. Douchebag.

Most people in your party are pretty douchey. Only exceptions seem to be Varric and Beth.

Though Anders was being a bit of a snippy ass to everyone near end game. Though considering how he currently has "Justice" taking over him more and more I can see why he's so snippy. Justice is a uptight ******. "Justice" even more so.

Aveline has her moments on the rivalry path.

Merrill...I didn't get to know her well enough. She doesn't seem douchey though true.

That said I wonder if those who see Anders go "It's about time." think Alistair is a monster for being gleeful about deceiving Morrigan with the book and pretending they killed Flemeth?

I got so pissed off at him in Merrill's companion quest, when the keeper died for her.

Anders: That was the noblest thing I've ever seen anyone do.
Anders: The world is worse off with her gone and you still alive.

I wanted to beat him across the head and stomp his blonde ass. Somebody just had their only friend for several years killed to protect them, and he remarks with that.

Still, I couldn't kill him at the end, despite all the **** that pissed me off.

Only reason: "A wizard did it."

It's funny.

Ah I see. Doesn't stop the Fen or Anders loving either. They just treat you a lot nicer as friends.

Though I adore the Anders rivalry mance. I'm currently doing it with a mage and it's...just so...
