Are you having issues with him on Nightmare?

Not sure past that, buy a few Maker's sigh potions, save before the battle, and try different set up for your characters. Don't think I have any more advice past that.

So far my largest problem is the Profanes. They seem to do a ton of dmg for some reason and I cant kill them fast enough before they wipe the floor with someone.
I'm saved right outside the room, but I'm limited on my options for group comp because I don't have all of the characters available per the story line.
If I get him past that part, its pretty much an instant wipe when he does his giant ball of death thing

Yeah I'm having a nightmare of a time killing the thing. I've got myself as a creation/spirit healer, varric, Merrill, Aveline

Set up the following tactic at the end of your list with Aveline, Merill, and Varric:
Target of Controlled Party Member: Attack
If you focus fire on the adds, you can kill them before you take much damage. Also, the profane are immune from death for the first 3-4 seconds of spawning, so once you get a profane down to near death, switch targets.
I'm not sure which "ball of death" you're referring to, but...
For the ball rolling thing, if you have Aveline's Shield Defense, you should be immune to the ball's knockdown. Aveline can slow the the speed of the rolling attack so you can easily move your party members away from its rolling path. Or you can position Aveline in such a way that the ball will never be a problem for the rest of your party.
For the ball that sucks your party in... that is what I call a red herring ability. Its more of a psychological attack on the player and makes them panic more than anything else. Despite the flashiness of the attack, the damage it does is piddly. Use this time to freely DPS the wraith. The real danger is what happens if it manages to suck in your squishy companions into melee range and you aren't paying attention... which brings me to the next "ball of death" attack.
He has a AoE attack where he turns into a ball and explodes outward that deals tremendous damage to anyone in melee range. This attack isn't a problem as long as you keep your distance with mage Hawke, Merril, and Varric. Its a telegraphed move so you have a bit of leeway in distancing yourself from the attack.

I've already got the assist tactics setup. Problem with the profanes is
there is no range limit on their attack within the room so they just
keep nuking whoever they happen to target and theres no way to ever get away. Plus their attack seems to be able to go through walls. If they target one of the
casters can take 2 hits, maybe 3 before dieing. The tank can take more,
but if I have her taunt everything she dies pretty quick. I didn't know about the immune to death thing, I'll have to check that out.

I managed to kill it with a spirit
healer force mage build but i don't count it.. revive bugged out on me
and made my party members constantly disengage and fully heal after
taking dmg. Sooo yeah heheh.
I had something similar to that happen, except it was with Varric. For some reason he could get hit by his rolling ball form, go down to 25% health then once he got attacked again he'd go up to full health. He wouldnt die. However, this was completely useless on account of the rest of the party being dead and rogues cant rez lol

focus fire the profanes as soon as they appear. they can't actually die as they're rising out of the ground, so just swap to the next one when it's health is just about 0 and it will die as soon as it fully rises out of the ground. Also, they're immune to electrical damage so make sure your Mages have non-electrical damage staves equiped and dont bother using electrical spells.Moonships wrote...

Have all of your squishies hide behind the pillar with crates, then as soon as the red beam is over, have your tank run out and focus fire them down. Have your party on hold so they're always behind the pillar, so your tank is the only one out in the middle.
You can also do it the quicker way, which is nuke the boss when he's in his dormant form, then when he gets up, pick off adds with Varric's auto attack.
