I think all of the prices selling/buying are the same.

I bought the two backpacks that I found early on, giving me a max of 70 items. Never had an issue for the rest of the game, especially with the changes in crafting and items-as-junk. One of them is at the Robe place at the Hightown market.

There is a max of 100 items (so 5 backpacks)
Act 1: Robes by Jean Luc, Apparal Shop
Act 2: Robes by Jean Luc, Mage Goods
Act 3: Robes by Jean Luc
Yeah..
Companion Gear.. I'm not buying the gear for the buddies I don't use.

Upgrades for companions are non-exclusive, you can have them all active at once, so just buy every one of them you see (for the companions you actually use, of course).
Backpacks aren't useful in this game for a number of reasons. First off you don't have to fully outfit your companions anymore so that saves some spots right off the top. More importantly, DA2 consists of many short quests and battles, no long drawn-out dungeon crawls like DA:O had; I can't think of a single dungeon that kept me away from merchants long enough for me to fill up my pack, even in the Deep Roads you can sell your crap to Bodahn, and since 80-90% of the game takes place inside Kirkwall, after completing a quest you always have a merchant nearby to offload your loot.
From what I can tell merchants all give the same prices for everything.

I found this thread really helpful - it has a list of all backpacks/companion armor/gifts/tomes so you can make sure you've got all the unique upgrade items.
