If so, how do your companions respond throughought the game? What does your end-game tend to look like?

I tried to. All the options have you come off more as rude or a tremendous ****** ***hat rather than any sort of proper villain :/

You always have to save Grace and her mages in act 1, you always have to help Emeric with his investigation, you cannot seize any power or title other than "champion" prior to the epilogue, you have to help hunt rogue mages, you can't knowingly help Anders with his magibomb. Really the worst thing you personally can do is off the occasional individual character with the murder knife.

Even choosing to fully support Meredith with the right of annulment leads you character to repeatedly remark that you are just trying to help Kirkwall and make the word a better place.

You don't both become the Viscount and flee. Those're two seperate endings.

thus the "prior to the epilogue" line.

But yes you can be viscount for the roughly 3 seconds between Varric saying you were viscount and Varric saying you zoom zoomed away. Not much tyranny to accomplish in that timeframe.

edit: and I gaurantee you leave Kirkwall even if you are viscount, I just beat the game for the 3rd time a few hours ago.

I intimidated quite a few people and got that one Tal-Vashoth mercenary to side with me and help me do the Blackpowder Promise quest in the first act. That was good fun. It's a shame there's no more than a few personality-unique solutions sprinkled throughout the game.

There's also some really hilarious responses companions make about you being a huge jerk. (Take Anders with you when you go do the quest that Flemeth sent you on, and be aggressive to Merrill -- Anders' comment is priceless) But that's pretty much it.

Side with the templars: Kirkwall begs you to lead.
Side with the mages: You flee the city.

Nevertheless, regardless of who you side with Hawke still flee and dissapeard mysteriously. I don't see any personality option(red one) that could clarify he was a tyrant, more than hot-head aggressive doucebags.

Paraphrasing

Varric: "and they begged the champion to lead"
Seeker: "but the champion is no longer in kirkwall"
Varric "funny how quickly fortunes change"

Yeah, this is what I was afraid of.

My first playthrough, I played the typical Good-guy role, usually choosing the Helpful/Diplomatic dialogue options, with the occasional Charming/Sarcastic option with companions like Varric and Isabela; this was mainly because I was trying to get friendships up as much as possible in the most direct way I knew how, and I was romancing Isabela.

As I began considering my second playthrough, I felt slightly compelled to take a more "human" approach--considering all the crap (people trying to kill/deceive him constantly, family tragedy, working as a merc, etc) that Hawke goes through, it seems reasonable to me that the he'd become rather... aggressive. But as I considered this approach, it occurred to me that there might not be much facilitation game-mechanics-wise for a more ruthless, callous type of Hawke. And you're right... you're not so much ruthless and callous as you are just a jerk, lol.

That's kind of unfortunate. I don't really want to play a pansy Hawke again D: Sarcastic/Charming Hawke is good for some laughs as far as I can tell. I thought perhaps I could make a mix of Sarcastic/Charming and Direct/Aggressive Hawke work, but according to the guide, your responses don't blend to form your personality, they stack respectively; so I'm not sure if that's really possible--as one way or another you'd end up being either Sarcastic/Charming or Direct/Aggressive--there's apparently no middle-ground.
