Don't know wheter to waste points on it. How specialized are the forms?
Is shapeshifting good to develop?

There are a handful of occasions where it's useful. If they made shifting instantaneous like the rest of the spells, it would be good. As-is, it's crap the vast majority of the time.

It's a fun set to build up play, though far from being as effective as a min/max mage.

yeah it's fun to play but in terms of actually dealing damage or being useful as a support character (the two most useful ways to play a mage) it's pretty sucky .

Insect Swarm = Best way to move around non-hostile or cleared areas. You're amazingly fast, doing some of the Deep Roads quest was a lot quicker with it.
In actual combat though, it's more cool than useful. For instance, during the many duel-type fights, it's pretty nice to turn into a big *** spider/bear and eat somebody's face off, but more often than not you'll do more damage with practically any spell, plus overwhelm only seems to work on humanoid opponents.
Insect swarm is nice for survival, but the casting time kinda negates it's usefulness when you're getting attacked. The AoE damage is good in big group fights because it's constant and doesn't hurt allies but it's a lot of points to spend just for that.
