So after playing through the first section of Dragon Age II, I'm starting to wonder where exactly Kirkwall is located. Obviously it's not Ferelden, since they are a minority in the city. Is there a map or something that could give me an idea of where it is in relation to the other kingdoms?

Kirkwall is in the Free Marches,an unincorporated collection of independent city-states directly north of Ferelden.

It's between Ferelden (to the south) and the Free Marches (to the north). The Amaranthine Ocean (to the east) has a narrow stretch that comes inland toward Orlais (to the west), this bit of ocean separates Ferelden from the Free Marches. Kirkwall lies upon the northern side of this bit of ocean (the Free Marches side) along the coastline between the two regions.
Nevarra is directly to the NW of Kirkwall--W of the Free Marches; and the Tevinter Imperium is directly north of Nevarra.
