True, or perhaps a 'selected' voice over? One that can match the character you've created?

Well originall in DAO I had thought those Battlecries were choosing my selected voice.

I hadn't realized that it was only a battlecry.

Btw, I have no problem with voice over.

I love the Fable series.

I liked Two Worlds 2.

But I also prefer no voice over. Because I can be the hero.

I agree, and for me the two are entirely different experiences which don't hold up well for comparison. If one game has voice, and another doesn't, for me that is two entirely different games. One is a cinematic experience, and another is an experience more akin to reading. Or like you call it "be the hero".

That said I can sometimes also immerse/identify myself with protagonists, in both cinematic games or movies, to an extent where I reach the point of feeling like I am the hero.

He didn't just not speak in major cutscenes, all he had were battle cries.

Honestly never bothered me, It meant I could be a dwarf/elf/human, bi/gay/straight, evil/neut/good, or any combination I wanted, within a rather large dialog tree. Those games are dying, DA2 is just proof in pudding form.

One day I will have to play only old games to get any complexity of character and story.

I'd love a game in the true spirit of Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and similar as much as the next one, walls of texts and a myriad of choices and in-depth lore, I'd spend hundreds of hours with that. Don't need fancy 3D, console gameplay, streamlined classes or voice-acting to make an awesome game at all.

I don't like the halway compromises either though. Either make them like they used to, or call it something else. I do enjoy todays games as well though like the Dragon Age ones, but they aren't suited for comparison with the games you long for. They are a different genre I feel, and there hasn't been one like that in far too long a time sadly.

EDIT: I'd like to clarify that I don't count Dragon Age: Origins as a sufficient game to that effect. Even with the different origins and (for me) limited choices it all felt very one-tracked and it didn't diversify enough for my taste to measure up to a game with enough complexity of character and story. But I do agree that Dragon Age 2 is even more limited in that respect! <_<
