why aren't there any references to it?  you'd think being related to the "hero of ferelden" would at least get a reaction from someone.

or does it happen later in the game (this is my 2nd play and still on chapter 1 using my Amell Warden as the imported save from DA:O)?

I never found anything that related being a human mage Amell in DAO to DA2... I may have missed something though...

Your mother mentions it once in a conversation. All other mentions (few as they are) focus more on that Amell being a mage.

The Mage Warden Amell was probably taken from the family young & never knew them again, so Hawke wouldn't know about the connection.

I find this unlikely.  With how the Amell family always having a "strong tie to magic" is thrust in your face so much.

edit: not unlikely in that mage warden wasn't taken as a young child but that in the family itself doesn't know.

You get one reference from your mother in the first (?) chapter. Make it last.

But anyway, I'm pretty sure they're only cousins and it's not as though they knew eachother. Some more mention might have been nice but it might have felt like having an Origins reference just for the sake of having another Origins reference.

One of the devs remarked on this. They ARE cousins, but it's distant, and has no bearing on the game. It's just a minor tie-back to DA:O, if the Warden was human.

They were cousins.  Mom mentions it.

But think about it - when did your mages family name come up in Origins?

Basically, I think it likely nobody in Ferelden cared about the mages family name.

And I also think using the same family is just a gratuitous DAO tie-in.

Really? The Warden was an Amell? In my game he was a Cousland.

Just messing with you. Amell is Hawke's second cousin, I believe, but aside from being an interesting little historical factoid it's got very little relevance on the game, so why would any of the characters bother bringing it up? Also, as TJPags up there said, I don't think anybody really cares much about the Warden's family name, particularly when they come from the more downtrodden or ignored parts of society, so to speak (as both elf origins, casteless dwarves, and yes, mages do).

I had been hoping for a bit more of a connection to be mentioned, but then I got to thinking a bit. The Amells (at least Leandra's branch) is from Kirkwall and she only ends up in Fereldan because she marries Malcolm Hawke. Meanwhile, the Amell Warden is at the Circle in Fereldan. I'm sure I have family in some other chunk of the world I'm unaware of.

Bethany mentions it a couple of times. So does Cullen. But yeah, it's not at all important, just a small nod to DA:O

Bethany mentions that she could have been with their cousin, the hero of Fereldan, if she had joined the circle during one of her "I'm unsure of my self" conversations.

Cullen will also mention it in Act 2 I believe it was. That may just be if your Amell was female though.

It's only a factor if the Hero of Ferelden was a mage, and it's a distant relation through Leandra. A non mage hero of Ferelden wouldn't have any connection with the Amel's.

If you import a save with mage warden you get a line or 2 of dialog. However my warden was a Cousland so he wasn't an Amell.

It was Leandra's cousin who was the mother of Amell.

Cullen mentions it regardless of gender in the second act. How he reacts to you I think depends on what you did. I'm surprised Alistair or whoever rules Ferelden doesn't mention it but then again I pissed him off by letting Loghain live. Other than that, it's only Leandra and Bethany, maybe Carver, that mention him/her.
FYI there's a few nice references to the Dalish warden by Merrill and Anders in random banter which is nice.
