So I've fought this dragon in act III in the bone pit. It went about as follows:

I've got Anders for healing, Merill for DPS, and Varric for morale. I command my team to stay put - got tactics set up for Anders to heal heal heal and drink drink drink - I'm a 2H warrior - had to leave carrot top behind for this one I figured.

Immediately after the fight starts, my team rushes towards me. I tell them to stop again. I summon my mutt, and then lay into the dragon with whatever my big overhead attack is, to get its attention. My dog proceeds to - nothing. It does nothing. It stands there and takes an ass whooping while looking at the dirt.

My health gets below 50% and I am fortunate to get the expected heal from Anders. We move into the 2nd phase of the fight, where the fireballs come raining down and the pelicans come out to bite. I tell my team to stay so I can take the fireballs and deal with the whelps but- nevermind. They rush towards me and we get swamped with pelicans. In the meantime, I run off to lead my devoted team to a safe corner somewhere while the fireballs come down. Anders is at about 5% health and yelling about this and that. He won't heal himself, cooldown maybe, I figure, So I flip to him and hit tthe minus key... nada - I hit it again... nada.. .. So I flip to inventory and double click a pot for him - the icon shows up under his nameplate - nevermind he's down. Varric seems pissed about it too. I hit my attack nearest key but - nevermind. Attack nearest apparently means keep attacking the dragon that is now on the hill and that I can't get to via melee.

The dragon lands and I could care less about Varric at this point. I summon my dog again, since he provided such a fearsome dirt-stare during the last stage. Ol' reliable shows up and provides the confusing diversion by staring into the dirt again. Varric is dead in seconds. Didn't stay where I wanted him to. Merril isa bundle of bark and yelling something or other in a far corner but not doing a damned thing with regards to the fight.

So I do the same thing I did during the Qunari boss fight - chug pots over & over, watch my toon swing at it over & over, pressing the occasional key when a particular cooldown is up.

I know some of these fights might be a breeze for kids fresh out of the dermatologists office but seriously - do these boss fights really amount to spamming potions? I would employ some strategy if THE GAME ALLOWED ME TO. Craptacular.

Words of advice?
Fire resist. Every single rune slot, and any jewelry you can manage. Shrug off the fire, and it makes things remarkably easier.

My first game, I rolled over the dragon without hardly trying. My second... it was brutally ugly, and I couldn't figure out why. Still not sure what the amazing difference between the two was, but after banging my head on the desk for a bit, I decided to try fire resist, and wham bam dead dragon.

Hey thanks - I had FR gear and didn't wear it - but I didnt need to. My team was running around like idiots and I was not really taking that much damage. If anything I figured the only heals Anders would need to cast would be on me. The problem was getting my crew to stay put, or otherwise do anything - I've had a recurring problem where they won't drink pots upon command and I now have it worked into their tactics, along with mana pots for Anders:/

My tank (Fenris both times) only took damage when the dragon decided to play CHOMP THE ELF (I really miss DA:O's ability to knock party members out of enemy holds), but the FR helped my squishies a lot. The dragon shooting homing fire missiles at them got a lot easier to handle when said missiles didn't take off >50% of their life! Keeping Anders with Panacea running might also be helpful, if you weren't already.

It can also take a bit of micromanagement during the dragonling attacks, trying to get everyone together so your tank can take the aggro. Does Varric have Armistice/Goad? Some way to keep aggro off Anders?

I honestly don't know. I've been pumping his points into everthing range oriented since I don't have a lot of options in that regard. I don't even think that's really the problem. If I could keep my team away from the rain of fire we'd be ok but no one obeys anything - least of all the drink health pot option.

I think potions are a cop-out anyway tbh - in other games I gauge my success during tough encounters by my ability to overcome them witout what seems like cheater trinkets, or the developers way of making up for whatever.

Anyway I'm cranky. But justifiably cranky imo.

Anders is a complete waste of time, I've never had him cast spells on my party members (glitch maybe).

He may well be. I've often caught him in his petrified state shouting at a rock in a corner.

The High Dragon was the only boss on Casual that required me to use potions. Also the only one that needed me to save my party from their own stupidity.

I'm not sure what that says about the High Dragon or Meredith/Orsino...

did it with varric, anders, isaworthlessa, and my 2h warriors the first attempt on normal and had NO fire resist using the stonehammer set. I used maybe 4 health potions during the whole thing and no stamina droughts.

Anders is pretty key on this fight though because his aoe heal is worthwhile since the whelps and fire balls will whittle your teammates down, I just used barrier on CD when the dragon was able to be meleed. It was hilarious seeing my bro get picked up in the dragons mouth but over the entire duration i took like 80% of my health as damage. Just used anders to heal me when i was dropped and kept kicking the **** out of it.

One thing i did do though was during the fireball phase i spread out my team so if they got nuked it wasn't some big aoe thing but i kept them close enough to help each other with the whelps that got by or came from that side.
