Are there any general rules on when and why I need to 'post to local' or when just plain 'save' is
sufficient.

You mean "post to local"? When you post to local, you update the database with the newest information of the file resource you're posting to local. So whenever you make changes, you have to post that resource.

yes sry, meant 'post to local'. I'm still a bit confused on which parts are hold in the database and where it's sufficient to just save the file.

Generally the resources with icons in the toolset are database resources, and the others are file resources (e.g. levels, head morphs). All file resources have to be posted to local.

But at the end they have to be put in a file folder again and packed for disribution to other players

in a DAZIP archive. Why have to double save the in a local database as well?
