How does one explain Anders becoming a Grey Warden, if you decide to turn him over to the Templars at the start of Awakenings; or did the writers of DA 2 simply assume everyone would have him undergo the Joining Ritual? Since Anders plays such a pivotal role in DA 2  it would be nice to see some semblance of continuity in previous choices made with him.

If Anders was turned over to the templars, he escaped again, and was recruited by another group of Grey Wardens, other than your character.

Does he still know Nathaniel in that contingency? They acknowledge that Nathaniel thinks that Anders is dead if he dies in the epilogue for Awakenings.

A plausible answer; however during the Anders and Varric conversation at the Hanged Man they joke about the Black Marsh from Awakenings implying he was with your Warden during that time. I guess Anders could be referring to a seperate incident in the Black Marsh, but how or why he would go there of his own accord is a mystery to me.

Perhaps Im being too picky on this subject but in my opinion Anders should've been omitted from DA 2 in favor of a new mage character possessed by Justice.

That wouldn't explain his connection to Justice though...His story does have some big holes if you turned him over in Awakenings.

Anders and Justice both died in my imported Awakening save. It makes me chuckle that he's still around. I say Ser Pounce-a-lot revived him with kitty magic somehow. :P

If Justice survives the game, doesn't he go around trying to right wrongs and the like? He could meet Anders before Kristoff's body falls apart.

Any number of explanations exist for Justice to join with a mage once he leaves Kristoffs body, the only issue is why and how that mage needs to be Anders given the various choices one can make surrounding his storyline from Awakenings. To be honest I actually like the Justice idea for DA 2, just not in the context of Anders.

An easy answer was given by someone else that I like, because Anders is familiar. You can see his transformation from Awakening to the end of DA2. If he had been just a new mage the impact wouldn't have been the same and most people probably wouldn't have had any sympathy.

Like Anders or not that's how it is.

Personally, I like Anders...even more in DA2 than in Awakenings. But honestly, the explanations for getting him here are a bit thin if you turned him over to the templars previously. I think this is a much smaller issue though the Liliana and Zevran showing up even if you killed them in Origins which I think are probably the biggest continuity issues of which I have heard.

I'm more curious as to how Anders is in DA2 if it is possible for him to die in Awakening. With Justice, he is a spirit of the Fade. He cannot really die. He just left Kristoff's body. But Anders cannot simply come back to life. Sure, I never let Anders die in any of my files, but there should be a reason as to why he lives.

Anders is in DA2 for the same reason Alistair is King of Ferelden in Awakening even if your warden didn't put him on the throne. A retcon for plot purposes.

Yeah, no. The only way that Alistiar is king in Awakening if you do not put him on the throne is if you do not import a Warden and therefore they could a) pick one of two candidates as the default B) have a contrived asking scene or c) not include a monarch cameo at all.

You know, if Anders died in Awakening then Nathaniel is just as surprised to see him.

That's the problem with "choices" in games. If Bioware give players too much choices, the story becomes impossible to control and eventually there're either inconsistencies or plot holes. If Bioware don't give players that much choices, or like DA 2, choices leads to same results, players start to complain about "my choices are meaningless".

I personally like how Anders changed from Awakening to DA2. It is difficult to have a character who went through a great change yet still remain consistant. Anders is always intense, but through barters you can still see his old lighthearted personality shining through, it kind of makes me sad. In a way, Justice killed Anders.

The cameos feel very forced in DA 2  and create huge continuity gaps given the fact players can heavily influence the outcomes of those companions (Such as Leliana, Zevran, Alistair) in Origins. Heck I'm suprised Alistairs cameo didn't include a laughtrack it was so bad. "The" Sten however is nowhere to found and perhaps the one cameo (if done with care) that would've fit well in the overall story of DA 2.

There's no way in hell Hawke would have believed he was a qunari.
