What purpose does the chest bit serve on the clothing?? It sticks out like a sore thumb and looks rather odd, does it serve any purpose and it kinda looks extremely weird.

For armor purposes in actuality, those things stick out to make a decapitate harder, protecting the neck and part of the face from sword blows.

I dont know why the Champion Robes have it

Emm interesting point, but i have never seen that on any other armour, I guess the mage one has it cos they extremely disliked lol well that seems the overall genre of the game.

Yeah it looks silly though I suppose it's part of the art style Bioware wanted to go with. No different from Warcraft characters having ridiculous shoulder-pads, really.

When I first saw them, that was exactly what I thought.

Although, my second guess was that Hawke's a messy eater and stores all the dropped food there so it won't go to waste.

You mean that little bookstand on your chest? Yeah, I'm not really sure what the point of that is. It can't be there to serve as a neckguard, it's in the wrong place then.

My best guess is that it's some sort of nod towards the Dead Space series. Isaac's armours have a similar bit on the chest (though at least there they serve a function as a holographic projector).

Looks like a styalised cross between a gorget and a grand guard.
The first OK, makes sense, the second one - where's the joust?
