I'm playing in act 3, and I've romanced Merril. In Act 2, I told her she could not have the elven carving tool (which brought her from 90ish friendship to strong rivalry. +155 in one go, w00t? ;)).

Anyway, In act 3, she's running off to her house now and then, and don't want to tell me why. Of course I think she might still be trying to fix the mirror, even without the tool, so I go visit her. And I find her crying saying "it's all my fault". And then I tell her "yes, it is, now look forward instead", or something like that. The she goes to smash the (still broken) mirror.

Now what I don't understand is what is she crying about? What is her fault? I've read some spoilers saying that if she fixes the mirror the keeper of her clan has to die. But this never happened in my playthough. Is this dialogue the same one you get if you let her fix the mirror and there is an incident with her keeper/clan? It seems very disjointed from the storyline I picked...

It's a definite bug. The same thing happened to me at the start of act 3, and I told her she could have the tool. I didn't get the actual quest until later.

It is the ending dialogue from a later side-quest. Pretty bad that there is a bug that contains spoilers really.

Damn, now I'm really disappointed.

I thought I could actually make a difference in her story and help her choose a better way. But now she's going to the demon anyway, whatever I say or do.

That pisses me off more than the bug. I really hate characters who are that one dimensional. It just feels so... dumb :( Seriously, every time we turned a corner for the last 7 years, there have been mages getting possessed by demons left and right. She's seen it all, AND experienced the seductive power of demons in the fade. And yet she keeps going on her doomed path, consequences be damned...

Single-minded (to supply you with a better pejorative; I'd use determined) is not synonymous with one dimensional. That said, there's already a big discussion going on about this in another thread here on the first page.

Do you mean the cutscene where she cries and says Hawke was right all along? In my playthrough she didn't mention what Hawke was right about I don't think I thought it was a cheap way of saying she had though about Blood Magic being bad on her own.
