Didn't he also say if he broke his vows to be with Hawke he wouldn't be worthy of her?

I'm confused...

there's much simpler explanation. He feels he's rusty and doesn't wanna disappoint Hawke.

Goodness, I'm horrible XD

In all seriousness however, Maybe he feels he needs to concentrate on retaking his throne, and he feels the fact he may spend more time doing that will hurt Hawke?

That's a shoddy way of saying it, then, if he's hiding behind his vows to do it. He's a very up-front and honest man, especially if you think about his banters with Isabela. He makes no bones about his sordid past.

It doesn't make sense that he would use his vows as an excuse when he could just say, "Look, I have to quell the unrest being caused in Starkhaven, because I have the responsibility as the sole heir to do so. Once that's done, I'm all yours, but it would be a crime to divide my attention between your affections and the throne." Hawke could live with that, I'm sure.

I admit I spoiled myself insofar as I read these stories before playing.
And after playing, all I could see was that Elthina knew him better
than he knew himself...the entire time. She knew he wasn't ready to
commit himself to the Chantry as a brother then, and it was merely
confirmed when he was all lost after Hawke kills the mercenaries and he
still wants revenge. A family that, for all we're meant to see, cared
little for his happiness, but which still meant a great deal to him; he
never left them behind as he was meant to when he took his vows. He
tries SO HARD to be what he thinks Elthina wants him to be - because
she's the only one who has ever CARED or believed that he could be
someone WORTH something. I honestly think he does it for her - she
showed him that she had faith in him and his ability to make the right
decision, so he followed after her. He says in-game that "now that [he]
might be good at it, [he] doesn't want it"; thing is, the guy is STILL
looking for someone to follow - someone to tell him what to do. I think
he considers it a little bit of a betrayal that by that point Elthina is
basically telling him "you don't want to be here, leave" in a way meant
to make him GROW UP and he digs his heels in going "NO, I *will* do
this! I *will* emulate you and live up to your expectations!" She and
his grandfather mattered more to him than anyone, and both of them being
very spiritual, religious people has, I think, given him the idea that
if he's to be "as good as" them that he too should take up that lofty
goal.

I just really don't think it's for him. He needs someone to
help him stand on his own two feet. It's horrible that the end of the
game pushes him to that, but even then, I don't know what his real
motives are; or if he even does.

Love him to death, but he was a
child for a very long time. Growing up is going to take awhile. (And
hell, some people never do stand on their own...but I really think he
can, if only he can accept that he can be worthy of Elthina and his
grandfather without being a Brother.)

I think this says a great deal about Sebastian's character in regards to the vows. He's built the Chantry up in his head to be this big, imposing thing, complete with vows that preclude sex before marriage. He builds this up in his head, and now that someone is there to challenge that view, it's turning his world upside down, and perhaps making him think outside his comfort zone in more ways than one. It's "not good for his vows" in that he realizes that maybe the Chantry life really isn't for him.

Seems like it would be really worthwhile to rivalmance him in this mindset, because it pushes him to stand on his own.

This. Just this.

And when the hell does he say "Princes aren't made for chasity."? XD

I'm really happy that Sebastian's story isn't over yet. So far I've pretty much never had him in a party or anything. I like keeping somethings undiscovered for later Hawkes =) this game I'm going to bring him about a bit and the next Hawke will probably romance him. I'm thinking of the rivalry path, hey, who doesn't want a military alliance =) I'll start scouting this tread soon for hints on getting Sebastian nice and angry.

When Sebastian took the vows he also took a vow in chasity (that's what I understand, anyway). So I think it's more of a personal thing for him, not because he joined the Chantry. Then F!Hawke shows up... It's like "40 days and 40 nights" DA-style.

Considering he was apparently the male version of Isabela before, I wouldn't be surprised if either his parents or the Grand Cleric suggested it. Wasn't the whole point of sending him there to get him to curb his wild ways? I would suggest it was his own idea to show his commitment, but if he says that line about princes not being made for chastity in his short story, then it clearly wasn't his idea at first.

Hm... That would make sense, actually.

Hah, I get the mental image of the Grand Cleric locking his chasity belt and throws away the key, then Sebastian falls to his knees "Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!"

I always thought that Andrate's face on his crotch served as a chasity belt

I should get myself a Jesus belt buckle.
Large belt buckles pretty much says "lookie here" and with Sebastian you're faced with some religious holy jolly face which basically says "I saw you looking, ye sinful bastard!"

I loved the guy, and hated him. There was something about him that made me think of him as creepy, and at the end I couldn't help but think "ther et eees..."

One thing i've been wondering about though, people say he entered the chantry at age 13, i find it difficult to see a boy running around whoring at that age. So did i miss something?

You know that Andastre was the Maker's bride and she had a lover or husband named Maferath(sp?). So I don't think chastity was required to be married to the maker. I think it's and idea that was devloped much after Andastre time to make sure people of the Chantry would only be devoted to the Maker and not have other commitment as if they could cause conflict of interest or take people time away from the Maker. The idea behind the Maker and the Chantry is a good one because it would push people to better themselves but unfortunetly it's people that make it bad and create monsters like Anders.

I assumed that he became a ward of the chantry years before he took his vows as a brother. And as a lay brother he would have been allowed to ... kind of. Well, that's what I thought.

Now that I think of it, that wiki/codex entry has to be a mistake. Leliana clearly states 'I never took my vows' in response to Zevran probing her about her sex life. Implying that had she taken those vows, chastity would have been one of them.

His grandfather showed Sebastian how to draw a bow when he was 13. He wasn't in the chantry back then. At least I remember it like that.
