Sebastian initially was hard to rival because he was in the same boat as Fenris: small acts of kindness would tip him back the other way. But then I learned which quests not to bring him on, and it works out well.
I've never tried rivaling Isabela. I should, one of these times. It's a lot harder when you're a snarker, or diplomatic. Though when you're aggressive Varric's rivalry is pretty easy to get. It's funny.
At first, I wanted to be everyone's friend, but now...it's just funny to rival, often rewarding too. I don't think everyone should be all friends or rivals, and I struggle with Sebastian. But really, aside from Varric and Aveline...everyone is fair game. Oh, you want this Arulin'Holm? Want me to distract the Grand Cleric while you do "something"? Stay in the Chantry forever? Exchange incriminating evidence for a ship? LOL Nope!
I especially love to rival Isabela. It's nothing against her (though I can't say I'm her biggest fan either), but I find it endlessly amusing the my first Hawke's thankless do-gooding apparently annoyed the pirate to no end. If you're having trouble, situations that involve giving money away help, like offering to pay the miners more or hiring Orana as a servant.
...And this makes me realize that if Sebastian were around in the first act, rivaling him would have been that much harder. The...method I ended up taking was being harsher on him and on the mage issue. My Hawke reacted very badly to losing her mother and figured stricter ways should be considered. Since I sided with the templars, it was...eerie to see the paralells between Hawke and Meredith.
Another way of going about it is a form of...vigilante justice. Recklessness, vengefulness. Killing people who arguably deserve it (Jarvias, Bartrand) won't make the lawful prince happy. There's also being too leniant with friends, such as letting Isabela take the Tome and Varric keep the idol.
By the way, I don't know if anyone's here is on tumblr, but I feel you all should be aware of this:

Oh man. If Sebastian doesn't get the
closure of avenging his family's deaths, and then he has to see his only
home destroyed and surrogate mother murdered...
I imagine that would be a very bitter, angry Sebastian.
And people wonder why he can't relax when that happens <_<
I am fearful of where his personality could go, though. It's been suggested he's a few bad days away from becoming something...darker.
Oh, and these mod screens=
