Oooo, Rival!Anders hated my Mage Hawke SO MUCH when she was siding with the Templars. "You're everything I hate!!!!!!!! *sucks Hawke's face off* :D

You could always have a Mage Hawke who agrees that mages need to be trained in the Circle (especially in Kirkwall, Blood Mage capital of Thedas), and uses Templar!Carver as a spy for templar activites to make sure she doesn't get hauled in. A bit hypocritical, I know, but Hawke could always think that since Malcom trained her, she's not like most mages who get sheltered by non-mage loved ones.

At the moment, I'm just planning on having a save for taking an alternate path to rivalmance Sebby with. Mostly so that I'll have a save of each for when his story is finished. My main play through of this Hawke will be something similar to your idea. I'm planning for her to have more.. Moderate beliefs. She supports the circle, and the Chantry. But is unsure that the circle is the best way. So for the most part, it's going to be a pro-templar play through until the end. Because I have a hard time justifying annulling the entire circle over Anders. And with a Warden Carver, because having high friendship with him makes me happy. And I love seeing how he matures in those circumstances.

Oh god, yes. F!Hawkes flirting with Sebastian makes me want to cover my ears in shame. It's FemShep and Jacob all over again. Only a thousand times worse.

Where is the flirt option for a Hawke who respects Sebastian as a person, not just an attractive piece of scenery? That's what I want to know.

I dunno, I could make the same argument for a lot of the flirts in the game being cringe worthy, not just the Sebastian ones.

(Though the Anders' pant inducing funny flirt is still probably one of my favorites.)

Finally finished my Anders romance playthrough last night. Time to work on Sebby's.

I'm going to have like 15 different saves for different possibilities with him.

Any suggestions for the play through? I'm already planning to do both friendmance and rivalmance.

Indeed. I'm always worried when I see people claiming they're going to "romance" him, as I fear they're getting expectations too high and, when it's done they might take it on the character. So if I'm to suggest anything...use your imagination. This venture, I would say is only worthwhile if you're already a fan of him. Be aware that it's not technically a romance; you don't get the achievment/trophy or anything.

I mean, I'm planning on playing as a male Hawke who's in love with Aveline...I know it won't go anywhere, it can't, but I'm still going for it because I'm a romantic masochist. It helps that I know that ahead of time. Sebastian is more like flirting with her or Varric than the other four, except he's actually receptive of it. Ironic, since with Aveline it's possible to get a peck on the cheek, but...it could still yet be rectified. It's okay, Bioware. I'll wait.

I try to pretend my Hawke is very focused on her suties and family responsibilities, and hasn't been with a man since before Ostagar, so she's really out of practice, but...yeah, Lady Hawkes and FemSheps could get together for a convention on laying it on thick.

It's fun seeing some of the more...unsure love interests squirm. "I need to pray. A Lot," is still one of my favorites, but everything after that...no tact at all. I'm not sure who thought that was a good idea.

Not so much crazy, but rivalled Sebastian and a live Anders at the end. I think it could shatter something...namely the veneer stopping the old Sebastian from surfacing.

Do you have the writers psychology/mythic models book: 45 Master Characters?
It took me 2 hrs to realise that these archetypes were alive and well, and our companions in Kirkwall. It even has a section on friendship and rivalry. Posted Image

Now Sebastian is a main type combo Messiah/King. These are direct quotes...In your head swop Divine for Maker.

Messiah type:
Because of birth he doesn't have first hand knowledge about the inequalities in the world and needs to be educated in them (aside: take Sebastian everywhere).
Every living thing is a manifestation of the Divine to him.
He cares about others recognising their own divine nature.
He reveres healing the soul above the body.
He fears:
He fears that people will be led astray by those on the wrong path, a desire to please the senses or dull the senses with mind numbing activities.
He fears that he won't be taken seriously and his message devalued.
He fears running out of time to complete his mission or watching others suffer.
Motivations:
He needs to be connected to something greater than himself in his pursuit to give and to receive unconditional love.
He must battle his demons to maintain his connection to the Divine.
He must face temptation and hold fast to his beliefs.

If I'm the only one seeing Chantry Sebastian in that,  I'll eat my hat. So onwards to the rivalled Sebastian, the King.

King type:
Often has problems filling the emotional void, so fills it with addictions to alcohol, sex and work. (aside: early Sebastian)
He cares about having a Kingdom to rule over.
He cares about having a family, succession.
He cares about being admired and respected for the power and fear that he can instill in others when needed.
He wants to be a strong force to be reckoned with. (aside: Formal alliance with Kirkwall)
He cares deeply about those under his command, and is generous with gifts.
He wants to be the best, and will compete no matter what the cost.
He has a family but will cheat on his wife by flirting or affairs. (aside: Legacy flirt is perhaps a shadow)
He is a consummate politician.
Women see him as a protector
He fears:
Losing his edge, and being overthrown.
He may fear the passion of his emotions, or the lack of his own emotions.
Motivations:
His biggest motivations are his own self-respect and self-esteem.
He'll do anything to remain in power.
He wants to keep the respect of his family.

The negative side of this type is the tyrant or dictator.

Aveline suggests both types in her dialogue. The man who cares that no-one is harmed, and the man who thinks that they would be laying down their lives in a worthy cause.

  • Aveline: Has Starkhaven called for it's lost prince, Sebastian? Would you give up if the city has moved on?
  • Sebastian: Like Ferelden "moved on" after Cailan?
  • Aveline: You've been reading.
If Alistair was made king:
  • Sebastian: It's a good tale. King Alistair is particularly inspiring. But I doubt that's how you see me.
Otherwise
  • Sebastian: It's a good tale. I'm inspired by the Warden Alistair. But I doubt that's how you see me.
If on rivalry path
  • Sebastian: I'm no tyrant, Aveline. If people die restoring my place, they will do so with full knowing. If that doesn't satisfy, so be it.
  • Aveline: After your actions here, no it doesn't.
If on friendship path
  • Sebastian: I don't intend to let anyone die restoring me to my place, Aveline. The risks are mine. And that will have to satisfy.
  • Aveline: It was well said, I give you that. We'll see.
So Sebastian was born into a family where his natural psychological makeup was not right for his actual life. He then turned to addiction (I'm sure Isabela would love the thought of a sex addict).
The Chantry then evolved his personality to become a hybrid type, Messiah often being a hybrid. What happens next is up to Hawke (you).

You confirm the Messiah type - Man of the Cloth
You confirm the King type - Man of the Castle

On not killing Anders, the book that we find in the Chantry has better words than I;

The human heart is more powerful than the greatest weapon, and when wounded, it is capable of the blackest of deeds.
Tales of the Destruction of Thedas.

There is more than that, but really it is all about character arcs. A dictator would find it easy to start a war...

I'm already aware that the romance doesn't go anywhere yet. I've been hanging around here for awhile.

I'm mostly playing it because I like Sebby, and I want to have saves for when his story gets finished.

Then you also appreciate my snark at the Bioware plot bunnies. Look on the page on Dionysius/ladies man for a picture of Porthos - Varric. That nearly killed me laughing.

Yeah, I had known going in what I had in store, I had watched YouTube videos when the game came out, and wrote Sebastian off pretty fast as not worth getting to know...Varric filled the same role, and he's the ultimate bro, so what was the point?

I did eventually start taking Sebastian places though, just to mix things up and gain rivalry when I needed to, and I enjoyed his banters...yeah, he was plotting to turn my friends, and possibly my MageHawke in to the templars, but that is what everyone is *supposed* to do to mages, without fail, in most of Thedas.  So I forgave him for being lawful, especially since he didn't act upon it.  I guess he grew on me to the point where it was worth it to have a save dedicated to him, and I went from never, ever wanting to side with the templars, to even now contemplating having a second templar friendly game for a friendmance save.

I really do hope to see his story continued in DLC or an expansion.

It's amusing because that's kind of how he hit me too.
I mean, I played the game initially thinking, 'Meh, it's a DLC character, won't have all that much to it.' and wrote him off as just filler.  The fact that he had the whole suggested romance that wasn't completable by achievement standards or as fulfilling as the other designed romances put him on the bottom of my list.

Then I finished my first playthrough with the Andersmance.
...
Yea... you know, if that was supposed to be a 'fulfilling' romance, I'll take my chances.

I think when it comes to general enjoyment of the romances in game, I find Fenris to be at the top of my list, and Anders at the bottom, with Sebastian in the middle (Merrill's and Isa's are two I haven't completed yet.)

Fenris gets the most closure within the confines of game time.
Sebastian's is giving us that dangling carrot.

And well Anders....  Damn it Anders. -.-

I hope we can hear something soon about more DA DLC...
I mean, I get that they're hyping the crap out of ME3 atm... (ffffffffff seven months away) but... what about DA?  Legacy was a piece of toast.  It was good toast, but still, toast.  Where's the rest of the meal?  :P

Do you think they'd release DA DLC around the same time ME3 is set to hit?

I watched my husband do a playthrough of DA2 (because I didn't really know what DA was, I just bought it for him *hangs head in shame*), and was like "How come you never use that sexy archer guy with the accent?" and got "Varric's better" as a reply.

So in my very first playthrough, I decided to use Sebastian as my archer instead of Varric, since I seen enough of Varric from my husband's PTs. I loved Sebastian so much, I was like "I'm totally romancing this guy!", only to go online and find out his romance is only half-***ed and doesn't net you achievements. <_< Since my first few playthroughs of most Bioware games are trying to get achievements and a feel for the characters/story, I ended up romancing Fenris instead (and had to kill him at the end, whoops).

Although I like that Fenris' romance gives you closure, I prefer Sebastian's, horrid flirt lines, lack of recognition, chaste romance proposals and all. For me, it's Sebastian > Fenris > Anders, but I still like them all in different ways.

Sebastian is... frustrating. I decided to friend him this playthrough; there was a previous one where I rivaled him and killed Anders, and now I'm trying out friending him and trying to make up my mind on whether or not to kill Anders.

He seems to be a genuinely good person, but he's also, very annoyingly, the most treacherous companion for either religious or personal reasons. First with the whole templar thing, and then the end decision. I think I may be liking him more as a friend, and considering that the Chantry is technically neutral in this affair since the templars split, having him be of a sympathetic mind would be interesting... especially if I keep Petrice alive as well. Though that would again necessitate killing Anders, and again I question whether it's worth it.

Actually, no, she just gets stripped of her rank and hangs around the Chantry from then on. She'll congratulate you if you talk to her in Act 3 and say something about an approaching schism in the Chantry.

Petrice was pretty clear about considering Hawke disposable trash, when you question her about setting up the Saarebas incident.  I can't fault her for being honest, but I wouldn't trust her even a little bit, based on her actions.  I would never expect to live through working with her, at least once Hawke's usefulness has ended.

I've never gotten the "earning the respect of the Arishok" achievement (mostly because I am the laziest person ever about playing to get achievements), but I don't have any interest in actively working with Petrice, either.

Interesting.

However unlikely to happen for me, I really dislike her too much. She even set up that poison in Lowtown during Blackpowder Courtesy, and has little regard for anything but her own agenda. Am I the only one who caught the elfs comment on that? I think Elthina put it best, using religion to ferment unrest and murder is diminishing the Maker.

She ranks my number 2 most hated person in the game. JAnders, Petrice and Meredith... they must be well written, they all press that 'red button' for me.

This.

Also, coming as I do  from a country that suffered and still suffers from a long history of sectarian violence, Petrice's entire attitude towards the qunari and about her religion makes me want to scream and reach through the screen to grab her by the scruff of her neck and shake her while explaining in great detail how stupid her intolerance and philosophy of 'innocent people's lives are worthless canon fodder for my plans' is.

Pfeh. And people accuse Sebastian of being a zealot.

Speaking of Meredith, how many of you get irritated by the looks that Fenris and Sebastian give her just after that Saarebus cutscene. When she's leaving to get her men before we face the Qunari?

Why does female Hawke never get hot looks like this...just saying.
