No. Rivaling Sebastian, romanced or not does not make him cold towards you. He disagrees with you a bit, but he still respects you. As for the rival romance, it's not quite as finished as the friend romance and leaves a bit more up in the air at the end of the game, but since the chaste marriage isn't a lot of people's idea of a happy ending, rival-romance in at least one playthrough is worth it, just to see if it gets further developed in the future.
Plus it contains the immortal line "I will offer you no less than a prince."

Adding my vote for the rivalry path, too. The only downside is that it hardly gets acknowledged by anyone. Except for Bethany, of course.

(And then drops to the ground) He does have that effect, no?
Rival is easy to do. I almost feel like it's the same for Merril. Hawke disagrees with them, but it's for their own bloody good. I mean, making Merril a rival is just telling her blood magic is wrong. That doesn't make Hawke evil (and while she can be mean to Merril, it's
nothing compared to Anders...I dropped my jaw at his comments).

My two cents about why the rivalmance may not be acknowledged: I don't think the 'alliace' has happened yet. During one of the random conversations with Talis it sounds the Champion still isn't the proper Viscountess yet.
Probably because Seneshal Bran seems so slow with the paperwork. He did seem so occupied in the DLC. And since Sebastian is still there in Kirkwall, it looks like he's not technically the prince yet.
Dude, go get your city-state back. Considering you took out that Avvar Sky mini-boss while the rest of my team was on the ground, I'm pretty sure you can handle it.
