The families should be optional content in these RPG's

Here's probably a topic many wont agree with but it really takes away from the roleplaying aspect.

My favourite kind of character is a middle-aged black man who is a warrior/ranger. The kind character with big muscles and tough look but a good heart inside.

It's kind of hard to have conversations with your mother who might sometimes look younger than you are and is white. I had this issue in Origins eventhough the human noble background was well orchestrated and I enjoyed getting my revenge against the Arl.

But seriously, shouldn't this be optional? It would be nice to have the option of starting as an unknown person who doesn't really have a solid background, just a couple of distant relatives.

That's why I almost always take the Dalish background in Origins, because it's easier to roleplay your character and have a make-believe background.

And it seems families are only meat for the grinder. The cheapest way to create a shock factor so you have a reason to do stuff. They always end up dead or kidnapped.

Atleast in Mass Effect I only received letters from my parents. That was done well.

Your mother was white? Shouldn't she be black with your character?

That was in Origins but the whole age issue is there.

It would be nice to have the option of startings as an incognito altough I understand DA2 was probably a prologue to bigger events and they wanted to present Hawke to us.

But it's kind of tiresome to know from the get-go that your family members will get the axe at some point anyway. I had no illusions about that.

I can totally understand that and it really gives another element to the story if you play the right kind of character.

But it would be better as an additional and optional content, not as the major focus point..

I like tragedy in my games, thank you. Plus heroes in fantasy stories almost never have parents anymore.

Personally I dislike having a family because it means the game kind of forces you to "care" about them.

While the quest with the mother was interested, I didn't like the forced dialogue, and having my Hawke shout out every five seconds while looking for her, it took away from the role-playing.

Carver and Leandra were awesome characters, but I get where the OP is coming from. Sometimes it's fun to play as a random mercenary or wanderer... but that just isn't what DA2 is based on. I'm not even sure how they could have accomplished this, unless you mean giving us the option of 2 or more "origins" for Hawke... since they are trying to tell one story about one person, that's just not happening.

Although I'll admit, by the end of the game your entire family is most likely dead, so they don't serve any real purpose story-wise.

I guess it depends on how you look at the game as a whole. I enjoyed having a family and it gave me the reason for doing all that I did.

If I didn't have Gamlen in this game I don't know what I'd do.

No, thank you. There are games that allow you to play the loner with the unspecified background. Some are fun. But not EVERY game needs to go that route.
