I am not sure how to go about it, i plan to make my next character to disapprove the use of blood magic, but i don´t know how to make merril useful without it. She can´t heal, so i guess i will have to spec her in ranged dps. Which of the mage trees do you think would work better for her? (either gameplay or lore reasons i don´t mind). I just want an alternative to blood magic that makes her useful.
How would you build merril without blood magic?

I liked the cc/support heavy entropy tree on her as her primary. Works well with most compositions.

I did end up using Blood of the First my first game with her, but I didn't put any points into it until near the end of Act 2. Really, if you want to just dump everything into Primal she does fine. Petrify is strong CC and the most reliable source of brittle, Chain Lightning is great if you've got a two-hander who can spread stagger around groups, and Rock Armor is good survivability.
Arcane is best if you want to go more defensive. Elemental Weapons can be powerful if you know what elements to use. Fully upgraded Arcane Shield giving your entire party 20% defense and magic resist supplements Heroic Aura pretty well, and Barrier is the next best thing to Heal.

I have only given her Wrath of the Elvhen and I use her 99% of the time (The only 1% I didn't use her was during the first time in the Deep Roads due to story reasons I wanted to get). I didn't give her any Blood Magic abilities because my Mage is a Blood Mage and having two around seemed excessive to me and makes healing a little bit of a mess.
I built her mostly as a full ranged AoE DPS character which works really well. She packs quite the punch. Have her with full Elemental and Primal.

I did exactly this with Merril, I also took her to play the game on hard without a healer. This is quite doable, provided your other characters (aka the rogues) take good CC and survival skills to help the team out. I played the game through entirely with her as my mage, on Hard.
Early important spells:
Early important spells:
- Rock Armor (helps a lot with knockback)
- Mind Blast + upgrade (helps with controlling enemies, and threat, and has a super awesomely short 10s cooldown)
- Crushing Prison + Upgrade high damage to staggered targets
- I took the entire Primal Tree though in retrospect Tempest and Galvanism seem to be skippable, Tempest is just a bit too dangerous to Merril to use a lot of the time.
- Horror + Upgrade, good to lock up harder opponents while my team deals with the rest of the fight. Same for Petrify.
- Spirit Bolt + Upgrade
- Dispel Magic. An underrated spell as the buffs the enemy bosses tend to cast on themselves can be quite strong. Enemies will spend time rebuffing themselves during the fight too which slows them down quite a lot at times.
- Walking Bomb + upgrades (This was never a staple but is awesome when its obviously useful say when a bunch of high health lieutennants congregate)
- Upgrade for Dispel Magic (free dmg, some free healing)

Use her as a tank – particularly good if Hawk is a mage. Take Rock armour, most of the arcane tree and the wrath of the elvhen branch.
In combat activate arcane shield, rock armour and wrath of the elvhen. Move into the middle of the biggest group of enemies, flail around with staff, cast ensnare every 20s. If she gets in trouble use barrier or stones throw away.
Barrier and arcane wall helps the other party members as well.
Later add a few damage related spells to play with.

My Merril Focussed totally on primal spells in the early game (upgraded an all). She is a really good crowd control unit.
Then i focused on spirit branch and took all the spells there except dispell.
Then in the late game i just added some extra fire spells and winter's grasp from the elemental tree.
made Merril look innocent but very deadly

Yup, she's all primal w/ the middle branch of Arcane w/ maxed out shield with my DW rogue. I wind up burning a hell of a lot of potions when she's the only mage in my party though so Anders has definitely been the go to guy. Starting to level up spirit bomb, then probably some elemental. She's only got 7 or 8 more talent points to work with at this point though.
