So, Nightmare Qunari

My question is, what are the stats on Nightmare qunari? Am I right in thinking they are completely immune to certain elemental attacks like Chain Lightning? Or is my magic score simply insufficient to penetrate their defenses?
I had to rely on Stonefist and spirit staff blasts. And the occasional Fist of the Maker, but that ability is a bit ho-hum. Thankfully he is fully vulnerable to Petrify and Gravitic Ring.
Also, how did other people beat the Arishok with a mage on Nightmare? My way felt awfully.. unsatisfying.

Too bad Sten couldn't have been like that in DAO, that would have been useful...

Still curious about people's nightmare mage strategies for taking on the Arishok though.

I guess it mostly felt unsatisfying because it felt like just a massively drawn out kiting exercise (really, three potions?)... and because my damage output without cross class combos is a bit low. And then factor in that he's immune to half of it. I can see how Spirit and Arcane would help there. Though I quite like the paralyzing utility of Gravitic Ring and Petrify. What would I substitute those with?

Yeah, Crushing Prison is pretty effective. I gave that to Anders. My character is full Primal, mostly full Force and partial Spirit Healer (working on it).

also crushing prison, petrify, paralysis, and i think even death hex and misdirection hex were "temporarily disabled"
i never killed him, i just groaned angrily and reloaded to refuse the duel. by the time i did it i thought he had infinite potions and i simply couldnt possibly outdamage him.

For my part, I don't think that Nightmare is balanced or fun, from what I've played of it. It's just not a well-considered game setting.

As he is chasing you around the pillars in circles, you have to frequently let him almost catch you.
Each time he almost catches you, he stops for a second to take a swing and as long as you step out of the way, you won't get hit, but you can fire off a bow or staff attack.
This particular duel which makes you question your sanity notwithstanding, in general, Nightmare mode is lots of fun for me. I love the feeling of accomplishment after getting through a really tough battle and dying several times.
Nightmare in DAO was a joke because you can just spam cheap healing potions to get through anything.

To me, the Arishok fight felt totally unsatisfying because the trailer shows Mage Hawke dueling the Arihsok with fire and lightning - things Nightmare Qunari are immune to.

To be fair, in the trailer Hawke's spells sorta failed and he had to rely on those huge demonic arm things in the end haha. I was mostly unsatisfied that the duel happened in the throne room as opposed to the epic top of kirkwall/the stairs setting in the trailer.
My main gripe with the nightmare settings is having critter-level enemies with complete immunities such that I have to switch weapons half way through the fight (e.g. when some shades pop up). If they really have to be immune why can't they hang around with enemies of the same immunities rather than those of the opposite (like undead which are weak to what shades are immune to). Makes the targetting of enemies somewhat annoying.

I haven't fought him yet as a mage, but when dueling him as a Rogue (which took 45 minutes), I started to realize the pattern that could have made the entire fight much shorter.

haha I actually did that too!! (on my first rogue archer play-through) - I remember every now and then hawke would spin her bow around instead of shooting it...or get stuck in an attack and get stomped on. Very frustrating. I also came up with a method of waiting for him to charge, dodging then pumping a few arrows into him while he was recovering from headbutting the wall. And then I came across a strange bug where if I dropped a decoy the Arishok would stop moving but just spin around attacking the air. Needless to say I pumped him full of arrows and the duel ended pretty fast after that.
As a mage it was a rather boring series of horror-attack-attack-pull of the abyss-attack-attack and so on until he finally died. Pretty much he was either doing his weird charge thing or unable to move.

I also discovered that , even when the decoy was destroyed he never moved from that spot for the rest of the "duel" , i just spent the rest of the fight battering him

Unless you string together a number of spells which will incapacitate him long enough for other spells to kill him before he drinks a postion, you have to kite him

It actually makes sense- Qunari come from tropical islands which must be very hot all year round and often stormy which results in frequent forest fires. They may have evolved high tolerance to fire and electricity as a result.

It could be that the continent they came from is also tropical, however.
...nice link in your signature there, by the way.
