Mages are fine, except for the amount of immune mobs.

Some noname mercenaries, immune to frost, really?

Compare that to the 10k+ Assasinate from a DW rogue. Yes, mage damage is terrible.

Rogues are built for dealing single-target damage. That's the entire piont of the class.

I think you're missing the point.

It's fine that undead are immune to some things, and that dragons tend to be resistant to fire (not sure about immunity, since I dropped a Firestorm one one and I could have sworn it was taking damage), and so on. But we're talking random mook mercenaries who mostly deal with swordy-type problems. _What justification is there for them being immune to frost_?

That's a bit immersion breaking.

Assuming that no CCC's are possible due to immunities of those mechanics? Yes. Mage damage is the lowest.

Completely agree with Rieverre. It is most annoying, because you cannot foresee that and change spells/staves before hand. Instead, you are taken by surprise, and are tempted to try the same spell again and again to see if it is a bug.

Especially on Nightmare, where few would develope Fireball/Firestorm. This gives you even less options in your damage types. If you focus on one tree (e.g. Primal), which you should, it means that half of your abilities become useless against some enemies. Any Nightmare Primal Mage would learn that Chain Lightning does nothing to Profanes and Rockwraiths - a huge annoyance.

the big blue, "IMMUNE" popping over their head might be an indication to not cast that spell type. I didnt miss the point, I choose to disregard it and hit start, inventory, pick the right boomstick for the occasion, and blast away.

Have Merril and Anders both cast Tempest on a mob and watch the mob dance their last dance.

So, went back and paid attention to the damage my Merrill was doing with her spells.

Image IPB

That's 15689 total damage from a chain lightning, and it seems to be pretty typical damage for her.

It's not ZOMGASSASSINATE damage, but it's nothing to shrug off either.

some spell immune is fine - but some basic mobs having TWO immunities is ridiculous. I was in Qunari cave and they are fire and lightning immune. So I am left with winter's grasp and cone of cold every 20 and 30 seconds. Seriously stupid.

My Winter's Grasp was hitting upwards of 800 on my mage playthrough on Hard. Firestorm was also doing 280+ damage each time one of the fireballs landed on an enemy with its splash damage. Cone of Cold was also doing around 500 damage to all targets hit. My staggered Chain Lightning hit some mook for 4500.

I think mages are fine.

Yea, Winter's Grasp can pull good numbers.  I have boosted fire dmg atm and my fire storm is just rocking.  I combine that with tempest and splash in some lightning chain and I can take out a massive group of enemies without my party lifting a finger.

For some reason the rogue assassinate has to be brought up everytime, but that is only 1 enemy.  Mages can take out a group of 10+ with 1 or 2 spells solo.

I forget off the top of my head and my PC is too busy encoding a vid right now to check, but she's sadly low on +% lightning damage because I was apparenently dumb and sold Eye of the Storm.

She's at around 54 magic and like +6-10% electical damage, if I remember right.

The better question, is 600 damage good enough?

Doing 600 on a single target would be low, or even on a few targets. That's why you use cross-class combos. :P

The highest I've seen her Chain Lightning hit for now that I'm paying attention was ~6k on some poor undead during the Orsino fight, but sadly DA2 is retarded sometimes and doesn't actually save a screenshot when I press the button. ~_~

yeah, cause who doesnt get crushing prison, horror, walking bomb, stonefist, makers fist, hemoragge, grave robber, staff damage(cold, spirit, physical, or nature which qun are weak vs), hex, or even the crappy cloud. but you get my point. If youre waiting for 2 spells, you have a ****** poor mage build my friend.

I didn't know mages had 20+ talent points by level 7-8... Unless you suggest respecing for every battle, in which case, LOL.

Have a warrior in your party. :P

Two-handed warriors can apply it to multiple targets with various passives. SnB warriors can apply it to multiple with Shield Bash (this works on Act bosses as well).
