I didn't like it.

Very generic.

Sounds like every other fantasy/mystic-language-song.

I was very confused and my immersion was rather broken by that moment I have to say. I'm just talking to her and then instruments start playing and she gets a bunch of effects on her voice, I think the strange way they altered her voice made that sequence more jarring than what you'd see in something like a musical and more bollywoodesque.

An excellent song and I didn't understand a word of it...but then again I've always like Enya and I don't understand her either...

... @balu1982 no imaginations and of course it isn't a top ten chart hit ...

so for that situation it was a good one.

What was more disturbing, that my char didn't even put his armor away when he had sex with her :-) still wonder, how that worked out ! But with Morrigan he undressed at least ... maybe because with Leilana it was outside of the tent :-) he isn't exhibitionistic ...

In Uthenera

Haharen na melana sahlin

emma ir abelas

souver'inan isala hamin

uhenan him dor'felas

Translation from elven tongue:

Elder your time is come

now I am filled with sorrow

weary eyes need resting

heart has become grey and slow

in waking sleep is freedom

we sing, rejoice

we tell the tales

we laugh and cry

we love one more day

--From "In Uthenera", traditional elven song of unknown origin

Yeah, the song is a fine one, it just seems like a rather dubiously lip-synched music video and not like a live performance at a campsite.

I found the scene relatively cheesy and highly awesome at the same time.

BIG, BIG, BIG kudos to BioWare for pulling this off.

exactelly and it's kinda ridiculous since Silent Team (Konami) had pulled something quite good in lip sync for a song in joke for Silent Hill 3 music video

It wasn't even her singing. As far as I know, they just started the song that was a vital core thematical piece to the game and let it overlap what we were seeing. It was as if the entirely world went mute just to listen an "interpretation" of her song.

It wasn't the most immersive piece, though it's what you'd expect from Western entertainment.

If this was Japan, she'd have to do voice-acting AND singing the themesong at the same time! The tyranny, just imagine!

声優(seiyuu[せいゆう]) are superior.

I think if they handled it like a musical, let the ambient sounds come through, not post-process the vocals to death and limit the instrumental elements if you choose to include them, it could have been good, but as you said, they pretty much took a complete song with all the elements one would expect of a song and tried to add it in the game, and it just didn't work out.

I thought it was a nice emotional moment in a mostly violent game, but it was a little cheesy at the same time. The sentiment, timing and way it was done were all very nice, but the clearly different singing voice was a tad jarring. It reminded me a bit of Disney's Aladdin and the like. I suppose it would depend on whether Leliana's voice actress could sing though, and they'd probably rather have a beautiful song sung well rather than sung average, even if it's obvious.

I thought that might be part of the reasoning for doing it this way, but in that case it seems like a bad idea to have a bard voiced by an actress that couldn't sing, especially if this scene was planned when she was hired.

That's a hard choice really. I don't know about you, but I personally adore Leliana's voice. Her accent and the inflections of her voice, and the way her character is... it's just so adorable and fitting. I can't imagine her sounding like anything else now. Because of that, I don't really feel that getting rid of that would be an appropriate trade-off for what is essentially about a couple of minutes of singing.

I thought the concept was quite gutsy and I applaud Bioware for being so creative. It was a pleasant surprise. It could have been a bit more effective and touching if Leliana used a single instrument such as a guitar or mandolin with no reverb. It seemed a little over-produced.

Song was cool. Voice did not match speaking voice (which is all that uncommon), but it seemed overly mismatched, possibly because her character didn't seem like the kind to know that style that well. The "music video" (I guess you'd call it -- cutscene sequence with the song) was more than a bit silly. Reminded me of a kid's CGI cartoon. I was waiting for one of the tough guys (no spoiler) to cry.

Also... Lull. Everything stopped for this song. Maybe some players take to this kind of long period of no action with no interaction, but the other cutscenes are either short or action-packed.

(A lull is a break in the action that's often boring to an audience. It's not a lulz, a LOL variant.)

I personally liked the lull. One needs a break and a little time out from all the action now and then. It's also no longer (and in fact, in some cases, shorter) than some of the conversations you could have at camp with some of the party members. Admittedly, you interact during those moments, but it's still essentially a quiet time away from the danger and battle.

Can I also interject a tad off-topic here and say that the end-credits music "I Am The One" is absolutely beautiful too.

Great song, but its insertion into the game was a bit sketchy. Had the singer done this a' cappella' without the production effects/instruments, it would have been more moving, I think.

I did enjoy the inclusion of my party members at the camp, looking on and listening, thinking and reacting, as they were.

Cheesy? I weep for today's jaded youth.
