The only thing I really hated was the fact I couldn't save Leandra no matter how fast I got to her, she always wound up on the chopping block, it would have been nice to be able to save at least one member of my family from death, but even then if she died, I'd have been fine, but the desecration of her body just took it over the top....I wanted to reach into the screen and strangle that mage...

If there was just a way to get to her fast enough to just save her from being an insane mages plaything I'd be happy, but there's not...I find that the most depressing thing in the game...

Not being able to save her makes logical sense though, as there is no warning. The issue with Anders is that it's pretty obvious he's going to do something terrible, and the game doesn't allow you to do anything about it.

I still had Bethany and Uncle Gamlen at the end of my first playthrough. So it is possible to have people survive.

i just want to jump in here .... if i may. I just got to Act 3 in my first playthrough... I rather adore the darkness in this game. Its rare to find a game that will break such boundaries and play with emotions like this. They decided to cross lines. And sometimes, thats ok.... It makes for a better more realistic playthrough.

I also agree with whomever said to keep Varric in your party. :D he definity lightens it up.

The characters in this are fantastic, they're dynamic, and they have opinions. I love their opinions, even if I may not necessarily agree with them. If I'm honest... I think its one of the best games out there right now.

I think they are just trying to solve the problem they created with the Warden, way to many endings and origins. Making it very hard to use the character again and make a "direct sequel.
This game has pretty much the same ending and no epilouges, much easier to make a sequel too.

Yes.

The one big problem one can point to with DA2 is the removal of player agency. In DAO, the sequence at Ostagar does this, but the difference is that it's at the beginning of the game, not the end.

In ME2, I was able to get exactly the ending I wanted, without any outside advice. That seemed like the perfect balance for me. In DAO I had to play through a second time after educating myself, as there are a few too many obscure things that must be done to alter the outcome.

In DA2, there's really nothing you can do to alter the outcome. The game takes away control from you. Clearly Anders is acting suspicious, and there should have been an option to do something about his plan. Even if you fail to stop him, it would still make more sense. It's really the only problem I have with the game, and the only thing that can truly be called a step back.

Bioware chose to have a more linear story at certain point. That's their choice to make, and it works out pretty well in the end, but not everyone is going to agree with it.

I was pleased that it was a bit more linear. DA:O had a million ending options. And while I like having choices...  it seemed that there were almost too many.
I didn't know about the Anders thing till coming to this board a few minutes ago but I'm glad I do....  heh, that woulda been one hell of a surprise. Regardless. I do think this is an amazing game. I think the characters have wonderful motivation, whether or not I agree with it... and I think its rediculously well done.

Um yes.  and thats my novel. :D

I had the Anders issue spoiled by the wiki. I wish I hadn't. And there is nothing wrong with more linear approach, but the endings are almost too similar.

Well, with Mass Effect, it's so far "only" going to be three games, and it's easier to give you a wide array of choices & consequences within those limits. Dragon Age, however, has no such limits, so...

I understand that they want to narrow things down, I really do. All the same, I feel that they went too far. In DAO , they gave us a lot of freedom and epilogues. In DA2 they choose to do the opposite. I'm really hoping that they'll find a middle path between the two games in their next one.

This game is full of player punches . . . no doubt about that.

I really love dark stories. Like i said before Kane & Lynch was a dark story, real good. Dragn Age 2 story was great! Seriously Bioware keep up with the dark stories!

Agreed. I understand why a lot of people aren't liking the story but I personally love it (despite some minor issues). This is much more a "mature dark fantasy" than, say, a standard heroic fantasy game filled with boobs and blood *cough* not naming any names or anything...

I hope they don't change, on the back of Dragon Age Origins, it clearly states that it is a dark fantasy rpg, not a rainbow covered countryside, killing rabbits that ate a farmers crops, helping a boy find apples and ****.

I even got back Carver in the end and he was less of a dick. Isabella betrayed Hawke and Sebastian left as I decided to spare Anders.

Did you support the templars or have him high on friendship?  He wouldn't join me when I sided with the mages but was all happy and smiles when I joined the templars...as a mage yeah right.  Not that I cared I didn't like him from the start.

I killed Anders but sided with the mages, and I really enjoyed the interaction with Sebastian. If he's locked at 100% and had his companion quests completed, he joins you. It makes for an interesting facet of the whole religious facism angle.
