So I want to create a fighter/mage elf. Do elves get some kind of racial bonus with those weapons? If so what bonus and what weapons ( all swords or all one-handed swords or all large swords or just longswords?) (all bows or just longbows or shortbows? ). Also, is it true that the only time a mage can cast in armor is if they are an elf in elven chainmail? If yes, is there a great benefit to this and how many types of elven chainmail are in BG1/BG2 (maybe a tiny spoiler)? Thanks for any help!

I think it's +1 THAC0 with bow and longsword for elves.

Elves get a +1 bonus to hit with long swords, not with any other type of sword. They get a +1 bonus to hit with all bows (except crossbows).
All races can cast arcane spells when wearing elven chainmail, not just elves. Benefit of casting in elven chainmail: much better armor class:) In an unmodded game, mages can only cast spells when wearing elven chainmail, not in any other type of armor.

Because of the low levels in Baldur's Gate, I would recommend going with one class. In baldur's Gate 2, a multi-classed elven fighter mage is great, but in BG you will have a character who can't fight very well and a mage who can't cast much in the way of spells. Because of the constricted environments, your main character will need to solo a lot and he\\she better be as badass as you can make them or you will not have a good time.

Without too much of a spoiler.. let me just say that I would have some alternatives in mind to elven chain mail to start... armor spells can take up the slack some.

You'll be suprised how useful a fighter mage is in BG1.
Especially in the boss battles.
Similarly fighter/clerics can be useful as tanks in some cases - especially dwarves.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I actually found that I do best (at least in the very beginning) as an archer will a spell for backup. I put 19 in dex for the +3 range thac0 plus 2 points in longbow (using tutu) plus the the racial bonus gives me a thac0 of 14 at level one with a composite longbow. This has served me well enough in the first few areas anyway. I keep a longsword for melee and my one spell is for emergencies.
