I was able to have Isabela in my party at the confrontation with the rebels in the warehouse where it is revealed that they took her hostage. She remained in the hanged man, available as a companion, and I could even take her to rescue...her...at the wounded coast. This was a real game-killing design oversight for me

What I would expect would be for Isabela to go "missing" somehow before the rebels take her hostage, since it does not make any sense that she be there to discover that she had been taken hostage. Indeed, even if I took another companion to the warehouse, Isabela was still in the hangman afterwards, clearly not taken anywhere.

I have only seen this problem reported by one other person, which makes me wonder if it follows from some unique or unusual course of action. In my case, I had resolved the issue with Castillon (let him walk, Isabela gets the boat), and completed the romance story arc with Isabela (I'd go sailing with her) before meeting the rebels at the warehouse. It did not seem like I did anything strange.

So, two questions:

1. Is Isabela always the one who gets taken, or does it depend on romance/friendship variables?
2. Has anyone seen what is "supposed to" happen, i.e., the to-be-abducted companion disappears before it is revealed that they are a hostage?

it's usually Bethany/Carver who ends up as hostage.

If Bethany/Carver is dead then it is your LI. If your LI is with you then it is usually your best friend. One time they kidnapped Varric.

Thanks, that explains things somewhat. I was thrown off by the fact that I could have Isabela in my party at the warehouse, but I had not actually tested it with her there. With Isabela in the party in the warehouse, she is not the one who is abducted (was in fact Varric when I tested it), and the abducted companion did become unavailable. The bug seems to be specific to Isabela, and occurs when she is your LI, and she is not in your party in the warehouse. The game does not flag her as the hostage for party selection purposes, and you end up with the anomaly of her discovering herself at the beach.

The priority list is as follows:
  • If Bethany or Carver survives the Deep Roads, they are taken.
  • If you are in an active relationship with Anders or Merrill, one of them will be taken if they are not in the active party.
  • If you are in a romance with Fenris or Isabela, they will be taken if left at home for this quest.
  • If none of the above conditions are met, the companion with the highest friendship is taken.

Is this only if they end up with the Circle/Templars or if they join the wardens as well?

Circle/Wardens doesn't matter. I've had Circle Bethany and Warden Carver get kidnapped.

Even then. Just don't ask how exactly the Rebels kidnapped them while they where running around with the other wardens.

Maybe... a wizard did it Posted Image

Interesting.  In my second playthrough, I slept with Isabela (agreed it was just for fun); slept with Merrill (broke off a relationship with her afterwards); slept with Anders (also broke up with him); Merrill was fully on the Rival side of things with me (had even broken the Eluvian! ... yet later still decided to go to the Sundermount demon), and she was the one who got kidnapped (Bethany died in the Deep Roads).

I knew I should have let Carver die. Curse my sentimental need to go along with my mothers wishes.
