How many JRPGs do you know that have themes of religious zealots, oppression and more?

nitpick every word all you want. doesn't change the fact that he looks like he came right out of a final fantasy game.

Lets see.... Final Fantasy X , Final Fantasy X-2, Grandia , Suikoden V. Need I really go on?

Fenris would not look out of place in JRP, that much is true.

He doesn't have spiky hair.
He's not incredibly feminine, nor is he eight.
The plot doesn't make sense if you're stupid.

Nitpicking is what these forums are all about if you haven't noticed. I do not agree, though. He looks like a fantasy character in general and if that's a problem then that is just bizarre.

I don't think it's a full-blown JRPG, no. But some of the design choices certainly seemed to be learning in that direction with it's streamlined, more linear way of telling a story this time around. The first act ends the same way no matter what you choose, the second allows you to basically either fight the boss or hand over a character, and the game's finale leaves you with two possible outcomes. The only one of those baring any semblance to the often difficult choices in Origins being the latter.

Ironic, after Daniel Erickson claimed Final Fantasy XIII wasn't an RPG because of the lack of choice and linearity.

And before all the defenders lose their minds, I actually like DAII. It's a decent game, but it's flawed.

There are a lot of things one should avoid googling. Like the musculature of a bear... Sorry bro.

So spikey is... layered hair now too? Image IPB

Scroll down to Lloyd. Looks just like him except without the elf ears and tats.

So, the same color hair qualifies as exactly like him?

I honestly though FXIII was better than DA2. It also had a much better protagonist (Lightning <3).

What makes it look like a jrpg?

A skinny guy holding a big sword and swinging it like it's a dagger and the combat animations in general.

The limitation in equipment customization for your companions. In FFXIII you could equip only a weapon and something else. DA2 is a lot closer to that. Jrpgs usually do not allow for the characters to change appearance unlike wrpgs where you would equip all kind of stuff from head, torso, legs and hands.

This.

Seeing Fenris fighting...or the way over the top-fighting animations reminds me every time of a cheap Final Fantasy rip-off. I find BW's attempt to appear cool with it kinda amusing, though.

As much as I did not get along with FFXIII I'd agree. I really can't put my finger on what I disliked about FFXIII in the way I can for DA2.

FFXIII was the first game in that series I've actually enjoyed in quite a while.  I went into it long after it was released and reading about how incredibly linear it is, but found this to only partially be so.  I enjoy exploring towns and shopping in WRPGs but have always found it tedious in the Japanese games because the writing is usually painfully bad or aimed at teenagers.  As such, completely removing them and placing the focus entirely on combat and intraparty dynamics (as cheesy as they sometimes were) was a welcome change for me.  People also tend to leave out Gran Pulse when talking about how "on rails" it is.

Also, holy %(#$ is it pretty.

Like DAII, it has issues, but it's hardly garbage.

I don't see how making two-handed weapon playing actually fun hurts the game.... nor do i see making the combat more fast-paced as hurting the game... Honestly the biggest annoyance i had with the first game was its repetitive animations in combat, and DAII fixed that, now my character actually looks strong and whatnot, where as before he was definitely not...

As for the story being linear, i believe that people are labeling as linear with few to no choices only because bioware spoiled us with choices in origins. (even though i personally didn't find the "choices" in the first to be that lifechanging imo)

And to answer an earlier question, yes you can exclude yourself from a few quests by talking too much.
(i don't understand all the hate for this game, i love the story, and while the qunari threw me off quite a bit, the elf change i completely am thankful for) I rationalize the story as being just that, Bioware is trying to tell the story of Hawke, and to do that they have a set story, and then they tried to give you as many little things as they could(though they could have given more >_> ) while maintaining that story.

(weee first post ever on these forums)
