Well I finally beat the nexus golem gauntlet with solo nightmare mage. Curious to see if anyone else beat it or found an easier way.
You can pull stuff 1-2 at a time if you run all the way back into the corner of the starting corridor and hide behind the pillar. If you stand anywhere farther out, the arcane horror + desire demon will detect you and attack (this = bad news). But as long as you stay behind the pillar while attacking/casting you can pull stuff at will which makes this fight almost trivial. Just have to have enough disable (winters grasp, gravatic ring, petrify, horror, etc.) to disable stuff and kill it without you moving out from behind the pillar because you are likely too fragile to tank anything. (note: using blood slave aggros everything. dog sometimes aggros stuff too, so it's easier to not use him)
A couple other notes:
Arcane horror and desire demon both use a lot of spirit attacks, so spirit resist is really good here since they are the only ranged attacks you have to worry about (minus revenant pull).
Desire demon aura heals all other units (but not itself) constantly, so you will have a very tough time killing other stuff while desire demon is around, you will pretty much have to focus it first once you aggro it.
One walking bomb from any unit = instantly dead revenant (weak to spirit).
Heal is invaluable while you are waiting for the CD to refresh on your potions (bring some restoration pots!)
Blood Slave = kills a normal enemy from full hp after about 5 sec (does not work on arcane horror, rage demon, revenant, desire demon. DOES work on abomination, shade.)
WB = tons of aoe spirit damage if something dies.
Gravatic Ring = clump everything up + really long disable, duration NOT reduced by MR or difficulty!!! (this skill is amazing on solo nightmare mage playthrough)
If you combo those three skills together, you can kill pretty much everything but the shades + desire demon (they are immune to spirit). Make sure you hit the blood slave unit with some aoe skill (chain lightning, cone of cold, etc.) to turn it back from blue circle to red circle first (you can only cast WB on enemies, not allies). Then just kite around until you can finish off the desire demon (spirit resist helps vs her ranged magic). Once it's only shades left you shouldn't have any problem if you've made it this far solo.
Also make sure you bring an electric or spirit staff for undead + revenant (allures crook is good), an electric or nature staff for shades + desire demon, and a cold staff for rage demons.
As far as I can tell, abominations don't have any immunities or weaknesses so just hit them with anything you have. Arcane horror is weak to cold, electric, nature, and physical, so again pretty much hit him with anything. (crushing prison and stonefist do ridiculous damage + interrupt his casts)
I didn't try it, but I assume Grave Robber + One Foot In is pretty good also since there are so many units around and it is another way to heal yourself between potion cooldowns! Shades and desire demon will be immune though. (does this work vs immune stuff? not sure, it says damage resistance = 0 )
Good luck!
