ME1 worth playing after ME2?

First off, yes I know that starting from the midpoint of a series is never a good thing to do and I really should of bought and played ME1 before purchasing ME2, but I picked up ME2 on a whim when it was on offer for a mere 5 quid and was unwilling to spend more money on the prequel than the sequel. That's something I regret these days as i've played ME2 far, far, far too much. I'm now pretty damn bored due to suddenly having much more time on my hands so contemplating buying it finally.

My issue is whether it is indeed worth purchasing a 4 year old game of which I already know the general story?

You see i'm unsure whether like many old games i'm interested in the idea of playing it rather than actually playing the game itself, as it's not unusual for older games to become rather dated to the extent that you pick it up, play it a bit but never really properly bother with it due to the mechanics being so dated that it's hard to enjoy. Would that be the case with this? Or is the story so immersive that I should be able to overlook it?

Obviously a lot of you guys and gals round here vastly prefer ME1 (yeh longtime prowler) over ME2 so figured it may be worthwhile for myself to sign up and ask people that have evidently spent a lot of time on both games their opinion.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

It's definitely worth it. You'll view ME2 differently after you play the first game.

Put it this way; If you treat Mass Effect 1 like Mass Effect 2, you'll be severely disappointed. It's uglier, thematically darker and often feels like a completely different series to ME2.
It was a good game in its own right, and I will still encourage you to play it as I don't think Mass Effect 2 ever did the story of ME1 justice (You'll get more out of ME2 if you've played ME1, too), and I think the ability to get a 'canon' Shepard for yourself is unmissable. Same character through 3 games? Well worth the pain of post-ME2 ME1.

I'd say yes, just because there's a lot more... Well, "Some" more content available in ME2 if you beat ME1 first. Plus, ME1 has a much better overarching plotline than ME2, in my opinion. And you'll probably enjoy the Mako sections more after having gone through the god-awful mining sections in the second game.

I'd say go for it. If you enjoyed ME2, you'll probably enjoy ME1 just as much.

I enjoy ME2 more than ME1 and I say that ME1 is definately worth the investment. The gameplay is not that great and it starts slow. However, I urge you to stay with it until you get off the Citadel and at least do your first main mission as a Spectre. At that point, if the awesome story hasn't hooked you then it never will.

I don't know about that. ME2 is pretty freaking dark at a few points in some ways that ME1 never really approached.

ME2 does have its moments, I'll agree, but I felt ME1 as a whole was a much darker game, especially considering certain decisions and revelations. I think the more military-esque air to the game helped make it feel darker, too. If you compare the opening missions (Eden Prime & Freedom's Progress), ME1 is by far the darkest.

Will definitely be a pain adjusting to ME1's gameplay from ME2, get past that and you should find the combat enjoyable. As everyone else has said it may well change the way you look at ME2 (and ME3) the more you play through as there's some pretty cool stuff in the story which you won't have seen in number 2.

It's Mass Effect what's not to enjoy. =P

I really didn't find anything disturbing about Eden Prime, aside from the corpses I guess one could argue but that could be me just being desensitized to that sort of stuff.

I just can't think of anything that was really dark in ME1, much less anything like Mordin's loyalty mission, or Samara's. Not to mention Overlord, which is probably the darkest and saddest piece of ME fiction we've recieved thus far.  I guess there's I Remember Me, but other than that nothing really comes to mind.

I'll grant that ME1's military tone keeps it more self-serious for better or worse but even that element was relatively sterile and clean, like a more militant version of Trek.

OP i had the same issue. played ME 2 before ME1. after finishing ME2 i loved it so much that i wanted to know what happend before hand (and play more ME content :P) the gameplay isnt as streamlined and feels clunky in ME1 however the storyline is rly awsome well worth going through the horrors of getting used to ME1's controls menus and huds. if you want to tour through the game just for the story you can always use cheats

Do it. You'll learn a lot about ME2 by playing ME1, trust me.

I was a PS3 user. I never had the priviledge to play it for a long time. I waited anxiously just for Mass Effect 2 to come out for ps3. After completing it 5 times I went out and bought an Xbox along with ME1 and ME2. There were a lot of things that seemed insignificant that I overlooked in ME2, only to find just how important they really were in the first Mass Effect. It's an excellent story, totally worth it.

There are silly people like me who think that ME 1 is actually better than ME 2. So as Tali would say "its totally worth it".

Yes, because unlike the silly person above me, most people acknowledge that Mass Effect is superior in almost all respects in comparison to Mass Effect 2.

Actually, the large majority of people regard ME2 as superiour in almost all respects in comparison to ME1, as indicated by critic scores, user reviewer scores and polls. But you can believe what you want.

It's worth playing. Drive the Mako, see how the SR1 has no freakin' toilets, darker plotlines, see how different the actual ingame enviroments feels to ME2, no thermal clips etc.

It's not worth playing ME after ME2. play the first game, then use the file for ME2, and then ME3.

I say it's worth it, though I feel ME2 is the better game.

ME1 will always be close to my heart though, the first time touching down on Illos will always be remembered.

Mass Effect 2 basically was a "better game". The only thing 1 has over it was obviously that awe in first immersing yourself into the new Mass Effect universe, AND the story/atmosphere... BUT, Mass 2 is still awesome as well.

People keep saying that it was streamlined...but it wasn't...maybe if you were deliberately LOOKING for that inventory screen, etc....thinking it would be the same...but things were moved from the Pause Screen to the In-Game World...AND, it was made to be more realistic....flame if you will, but that's what it is....things have been far too exaggerated for so long.

ME 1 is the best game I've ever played next to KOTOR......but I will admit the improvements in ME2 make it difficult to go back again. I kinda feel sorry for the people who played ME2 first.

Yes.

ME1 is one of the best video game experiences I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

ME2 is a...............game.

Everytime the vast "majority" of folks state they feel ME2 is a better game I feel like this guy.
