Well...In a way...Mass 2 IS a better game...tho like you, I had an amazing experience with playing Mass Effect 1 for the first time. The Story in 1 is superior to 2, BUT Mass 2 DID improve on many of 1's faults...so...that DOES make 2 better than 1.....But it doesn't mean that 2 was a better "first time experience," than 1.

ME1 has 100 times better and epic story than ME2's story which is a fact and facts can't be proven wrong.

while me2 does a decent job of filling in back story from the first game, if you didn't play it at all, playing me1 will give you details into the back story that you otherwise wouldn't get simply from playing me2. if you want to get the total experience, play me1 and import the save to me2.

ME1 is worth it, just do NOT mix up the controls. I did.

(Im in cover, and I'll press F to exit cover but i use medigel instead, and whoop-dee-do I just wasted a medigel that coulda come in handy during a difficult situation)

I played ME1 after playing ME2, and despite some differences I didn't like (UGH.. MAKO), I absolutely loved seeing how everything correlated to ME2. (And it was interesting learning all about how messed up Cerberus really is in the side missions in ME1). I also wanted to change some options in the default ME2 (like the Council decision, the Rachni Queen decision, etc). I ended up replaying ME2 again after playing ME1.

My friend did the same thing. Before when he was playing Mass Effect 2 he had no idea which race. After playing Mass Effect he became a fan of the series and knows all of the lore.

I was in the same boat that you were in a few months ago. After playing ME1 for a couple hours you just want to get it over with because ME2's gameplay is far more superior than the first. However, the story of ME1 makes the game a must.
Also, you feel more involved in ME2 after importing your character from ME1.

I agree with this statement.

I owned a copy of ME1 since 2007 but I never really got very far in that game due to certain issues I had with the game design, I actually finsihed ME2 before I had completed ME1. Anyway, because I loved ME2 so much it and I was so hungry for any and everything ME related I went back to ME1 and managed to finished it. Needless to say it's very interesting being able to compare the full ME1 experience to the full ME2 one. Not only is it very satisfying to complete ME1 ( and have a  ME1 save file to import to ME2 ) but it's very interesting watching how much the franchise has evolved gameplay wise between part 1 and 2 as well as how very differnt the stories are structured.

I know what you mean. I am the handsomest, sexiest man on Earth which is a fact and facts can't be proven wrong. However, people keep laughing at me when I say that. Fortunately, we all know that the majority is stupid and doesn't understand facts. Posted Image

Actually play ME1 more than I play ME2 so I would suggest getting it. Plus having the first two will make the consequences of your decisions in ME3 seem more personal.

It's like comparing GTA 3 to GTA: Vice City.

GTA 3 was the first of it's kind. It was more than a game, it was an experience. Even though Vice City is better (in pretty much all aspects) GTA 3 is close to a lot of people's hearts because of the experience.

Personally I liked ME2 (and Vice City) better than ME1 but there are definitely some things that ME1 did better than ME2 (mainly story wise for me). It's definitely worth playing through though. I guarantee you that you won't regret play it.

I must agree with Raizo, I too bought a hard-copy of ME1 - the one with Pinnacle Station and Bring Down the Sky DLC included - on bargain price before ME2 came out, but never really got round to playing it until I completed ME2 once, and then felt "Huh, I want to see what I could change here."

Neither game is especially dark, there are no real choices that are between two evils and trying to discern which is the lesser of those two (save one near the end in ME1, but I'll let you find out about it), or at least I found it to be like that. But both are great games. Unfortunately, I found ME1 to be a much better game all-round, because it doesn't feel rushed; there are no areas of the game which feel like they could have used an extra half-hour or so in gameplay.

ME2... suffers from the more streamlined nature of the missions, simply because I don't believe that collecting my team should take as long as it did - at best, those things should have been simple thirty minute tops stints to get teammates. With a few allies it is, but most? Longer than 30 minutes. I'm playing for a story, not as much exp as I can grab, and the story-telling aspect isn't as thought-out compared to ME1. Though it is an unfair comparison, as ME1 is not only the beginning of the saga, but a hard thing to follow.

Lastly... ME1 has some things which are unmissable. The Citadel's hustle and bustle, your team being so much closer-knit and just... making more sense. No, my team can't do half what it could in ME2, but then again, I feel so much closer to all my teammates. In ME2, I ignore Miranda and Jacob on sheer auto-pilot, and I shouldn't, as they are great characters, but I already know I won't ever use them, so getting to know them just makes me feel guilty about it.

TOTALLY AGREE!

ME2 looks better & the combat is much improved but for all that I honestly think ME1 is still a gr8 looking game today. The controls, while a bit on the fiddly side @ times didn't pose any particular problems for me. I didn't mind the Inventory system or the mako missions either! I also preferred the ME1 charm & intimidate options too. I preferred being rewarded for sticking with the same team members as well. It gives you another excuse to play the game! The story is fantastic, possibly seeming better because this is our first intro to the ME universe. I feel that the story is much more fluid & seemless compared to ME2.
This is just my opinion & I certainly don't want to start yet another war of words over a videogame! ME2 is still a good game though, just know where near as good as ME1 IMO!

I had exactly the same problem, and I decided to play ME1 after ME2.I definitely did NOT regret it.If you don't play it,you will miss an awesome experience. And ME2 really feels different after playing ME1.

And somebody mentioned that ME1 has darker and more serious tone.I agree,Noveria anybody? Dr. Heart?

SO YES,YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY PLAY ME1!!!

Maybe I've just seen too many sci-fi's at this point.

I didn't find Noveria dark at all. Its certainly not as dark as Aliens (which is what that's obviously inspired by). Heart has some creepy mad scientist undertones, I'll grant but I found Sidonis' whole situation to be the darker out of the two.

As I said, ME2 did have its dark points, perhaps even darker than ME1 at times, but I don't think ME2 ever had the overall darkness and 'horror' to it as ME1 did. To me, there was just an atmosphere to ME1 that never surfaced too much in ME2. Both are dark in their own ways, but I don't think ME2 felt continuously 'oppressive' to me.

I don't know, I think continually oppressive I think

Which is what I mean, I may have just seen too many dark sci-fi's to the point where my standards for darkness have been skewed. Again ME1 felt like a more militarized Trek to me than depressing or moody in any way.

I do agree that ME2 has more levity in it though, so in that sense I understand where you're coming from.

God that song reminds me just how awesome Mass Effect 1 was and the mood I was in after finishing the first time. It may not have been as good as Mass Effect from a TECHNICAL point of view, but the atmosphere and overall story and immersion sure were better in ME1 imho.
Not sure if this still holds true when you already know the big secret since the slow revelation of what really is going was a big part of the experience, but as others said before, having the decisions from ME1 alone should be worth it already. Go for it.

as a gamer since 1990 I think, NO I know that ME 2 is a better game than ME 1 all around

BUT that does not mean that ME1 did not have some pretty awesome stuff that ME2 should have kept/evolved better.

1- what ME2 lacked is the huge "feel" of the universe which ME1 had, the prove for this is that ME2 actually has more missions yet it felt smaller somehow, the MAKO missions were pretty great although the maps needed a little variety, and the whole experience needed more polish.

2- ME2 has more variety in weapons although ME1 had "more" of them they were all just same modules with different stats, in fact here I feel that ME2 is far superior to ME1 and my only gripe is that some weapons (like guns) need more ammo :P.

3- ME2 is just a more polished game with a great variety in missions, the robot factory the rocking ship to name a few and these are just side missions.

4- ME2 has tons of characters, yet it should have kept the squad "chatting" for sure.

5- ME2 Normandy is way more awesome than the old one, although the loading time between levels can get lame.

6- ME2 has loading screens, ME1 had elevator rides which are better and more immersive.

7- ME1 combat system was a spam fest, ME2 combat was way better in every way and form.

8- ME1 citadel was great, ME2 citadel had more style yet it was smaller which is not good.

9-ME1 had more variety in armor, BUT in ME2 after the DLC content you can get just as much because of the mixing and matching that you can do, although the armor in ME2 needs a buff because some bonuses are just too weak.

10- weapon and armor mods in ME1 were a great way to buff and customize further I hope we see something similar with the ME2 system.

11- armor coloring in ME 2 is awesome :D

in short ME1 sure had a larger "scale" yet in reality ME 2 was bigger and much more polished, what ME2 needed was some MAKO style missions (polished), a bigger citadel, more armor and weapon customization for you and your squad mates, more squad interactions, more ammo :P

Sure ME2 main mission seemed less important but its not, its the foundation for ME3, we learned where reapers come from and it was important, sure it had a "smaller" feel but again it was more polished and had an epic-er boss :P.

anyway hope that was helpful.

Basically I agree with your judgment, except on those points where you praise ME2.

Unfortunately, all ME2 side missions have no dialogue. Compare it with Dr. Heart, Major Kyle, Corporal Toombs and others. Sure we get tons of loyalty missions which turn into nuisance after you HAVE to do 12 of them in a row. Without spoiling anything, it is in your best interest to do them, so they are compulsory.

Citadel was really huge in ME1. It felt like one big place. Now we have 4 smaller hub worlds which feel like confined corridors.

I doubt we learned anything we already did not know (maybe the fact that reapers are made in a "will it blend" fashion). We are exactly in the same spot as at the end of ME1.

ME1 was darker for certain not easily quantifiable reasons. It is all very subjective, but:
1. Color palette was dark in all places, ME2 was more diversified (which is probably good thing).
2. ME1 had background politics, you had to constantly deal with people who would condemn universe because they pursue their own political and personal goals.
3. It was not story about cowboy who equips biggest guns and collects super powerful side kicks.
4. The "main" threat in ME2 is established only in first 15 minutes. After you defeat it, you realize it did not even came close to what you had to deal with in ME1.
