My issue is whether it is indeed worth purchasing a 4 year old game of which I already know the general story?

Yes it is.

It is definitely worth it. Make sure you get the spectre gear. You won't need to buy anything else after that

I'm replaying ME1 now as a full paragon, never done that - the voiceacting is inferior to ME2 as is the combat and graphics. However I'm still enjoying it, even if a lot of the deliveries seem forced or overacted.

Tough call. The gameplay in ME1 is not really very good. There are also some needlessly tedious parts (although you can skip some of them). Still, you can probably pick it up on the cheap and if you did like the ME2 story, I think it is worth playing once. Just keep your expectations lowish.

I felt that the story in ME1 was stronger and seemed larger in scope than in ME2, but I feel wholeheartedly that ME2 was the better game. Some people criticized ME2 for it not having the ability to kill a squadmate, but I was happy that ME2 allowed me complete control foir everyone to survive.

If you never played Mass Effect 1, you never had Wrex in your party. You need to fix that.

Of course it is. ME1 is a classic.

I would say that it's worth it if you haven't played it yet.  ME1 has an atmosphere and story to it that ME2 lacks.  If you've played ME1, then I think the characters that were introduced in ME1 will have more meaning to you as you progress through the series, instead of starting off with ME2 and just reading about who they were in the Wiki or the forum, or hearing about them in game, but never really feeling any sort of attachment to them.

Just keep in mind that ME1 combat mechanics are a little clunky compared ME2.  The sound quality is inferior, and the graphics are too, but to a lesser extent I think.

Yes and yes. ME1 still influences bits of the second. And either way, it's still a great game.

It depends on the definition of complete control.
But yes, if you get enough P/R points, you can "persuade" everyone into staying alive.

I'd say the decision comes down to whether you can enjoy classic/cult science fiction (2001, Alien, Blade Runner, Moon, Gattaca, District 9). If you do, you will probably like ME1. If blockbuster action sci-fi is the only sci-fi you can watch, for example Avatar, Battle: Los Angeles, the Matrix series, Star Wars (original and prequels) etc. then ME2 will probably remain your preference.

Playing ME2 without passing ME1 first is nothing, but ruining of an ultimate experience.
Playing ME3 without passing ME1 and ME2 prior to that will be an even worse crime against nature.

Actually I LOVED all the movies from the first set you listed and I like ME2 far more out of the two. Hell Omega practically IS from a visual standpoint Blade Runner Earth with aliens. I on the other hand can't stand the Prequels/Avatar and thought the Matrix 2 and 3 sucked so I definitely don't think the comparison holds true.

I think you need to read my post again. What I said was if you like the first set of films, you'll probably enjoy ME1. I did not say the only people who enjoy ME1 are the same people who enjoy certain films, nor did I say ME2 fans only like the latter set.

I do think that if someone absolutely hates slower paced science fiction in which action takes a back seat to plot, they probably will not like ME1 nearly as much as they would ME2. I think most people would agree that ME1 was not as focused on action as ME2.

The "probably" you mean? I caught that but let's be honest you chose sucky movies to represent the blockbuster side of things and associated Mass Effect 2 with that end of the spectrum. I was merely responding that in my case no that's not true I love cult sci fi movies and love ME2 and in all honesty the people I know who have played and enjoyed ME2 have pretty much the same taste in the kind of sci fi that they enjoy.

No, not the "probably." But don't worry, I spelled it all out for you in my edit, which you should read so you can stop feeling offended.

I'm currently doing my perfect playthrough of ME on insanity. It's worth it to go to the older game to get a proper introduction to the universe and the lore. You also get a better view of the Citadel as maps are larger in ME. Of course, it's very clunky in several ways: atrocious distribution of loot and UI, the item management went absolutely wrong, braindead AI, mediocre shooting and the infamous recycled bunkers on uncharted worlds. Still, the story is good and set the mood for the trilogy and that's the most important part. Much better to experience it than reading a comic which can't compare.

Well, until Chud and Mac hit the reset button with the opening sequence of ME2.

No need to get all snappy, I'm merely disagreeing with you.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from, but you're making it sound a bit too extreme I think with District 9 on one end and Avatar on the other.

I think a more apt comparison is if you like Star Trek: The Motion Picture you may appreciate the pacing of Mass Effect 1 more.

If you're more of a fan of the Wrath of Khan you may be more inclined to Mass Effect 2.

Yeah it is, I also played ME2 first and then went back to play ME1, first couple of hours or so were really slow and not that great to be honest...but then it kicks in and you just can´t stop playing. Best storytelling ever.

And it´s great to have an ME1 Shepard imported to ME2.

So what if your not remotely a Sci-Fi film buff? ;)

Bought it anyway, enjoying it with the exception of elevators, mako and recycled areas. Guess this topic has now run it's course eh?
