ME2 is all about characters, ME1 is all about story. Let's hope ME3 will top them both! Gameplay is still fun in ME1 too. I think I'm clear enough.

It is definitely worth it. Make sure you get the spectre gear. You won't need to buy anything else after that
That right there is the main problem with the gameplay. It is the reason people think that ME1 combat is a spam-fest. The heat system from ME1 was differnt and enjoyable for people who can burst fire, but the game lets later guns shoot too much without overheating.
The concept was great. Choose between low damage high volume fire or high damage low volume fire. Unfortunatle the guns get really strong and we get moderatly to high damage high volume fire due to the game being unbalanced in this regaurd.
By the end of the first game I could fire my sniper rifle 18 times, with no sway and no chance of over heating. The 19th shot started swaying the sights. Everything dies by the 4th - 5th shot......so yeah. The pistole was the same pretty much. I could fire it at full rate of fire till it nearly over heated, then activate the relevent pistol skill and that would result in my heat reducing faster than it would be gaind, and the skill cooled down in time to activate it again before the heat became too high.
Yes, ME1 did let you shoot too much without penalty. It would have been differnt if the shields keept getting better, but they max out well befor your firepower options do making bullet spam the easy route to go.
NOW!! if the system had been proerlay balanced then people would have enjoyed it more, but instead they just cramed in ammo from Gears, or whatever making it more shooter like.

Speaking as someone who started with ME2, then went back and bought ME1 to get the FULL story, yes, do it, do it, do it!
Both games are brilliant, gameplay is (subjectively, for me, anyway) miles better in ME2, plot is more epic in ME1, but ye don't get the full works without playing BOTH.
So do it! You know you want to!

Try full scram rail X and hi ex X ammo instead. Then you better make the shots count, wich makes it much more fun.Evil_Weasel wrote...

ME2 is so much inferior than ME1!!!
But if you like ME2 as a shooter part I really suggest you to go for Gears or Uncharted.
As it is ME2 is a bland linear hybrid that as it is doesn't accomplis anything

Story wise, ME1 blows ME2 out of the water but I do prefer to overall game in the sequel.

To OP: Don't expect too much in terms of graphics and such from a that old game.
Personally, I think the graphics in Mass Effect hold up well, and are still quite beautiful. In particular, I like the use of colour. Mass Effect 2's colour scheme consisted of too much gray and/or shiny metallic for my liking. Perhaps this was because they were trying to create an altogether darker setting.

Not playing ME1 is like trying to watch Inception but starting half-way through. You can kinda piece together what's happening but you're going to miss a few things.

I agree. You don't need some super graphics to create a good work of art. We have now come to the point where the imagination and dedication of the artists are what makes a game visualy appealing rather than how many polygons that are on the screen.Chaos Gate wrote...

I kinda see the ME trilogy as 3 different acts. ME1 is Act I where all the exposition and story is, ME2 is Act II where all the action and explosions happen to lead up to the final climax/ confrontation in Act III/ME3.

That's not really true at all. ME2 is entirely self-contained, relying on absolutely no prior knowledge of Mass Effect lore. And ME3 will be the same way, since Bioware apparently think the third chapter of a trilogy is the perfect entry point to the series.

ME2 offers more fluent gameplay, a more cinematic experience.
Also, it's much more focused.
It has never reached the scope ME1 has.
Well, Eden Prime, the very first mission will remind you of ME2, but after that you'll be in joy of the experience it offers.
How shall I express it?
ME2 is a better game. ME1 is a better experience.

I was happier with my denial.

First off, yes I know that starting from the midpoint of a series is never a good thing to do and I really should of bought and played ME1 before purchasing ME2, but I picked up ME2 on a whim when it was on offer for a mere 5 quid and was unwilling to spend more money on the prequel than the sequel. That's something I regret these days as i've played ME2 far, far, far too much. I'm now pretty damn bored due to suddenly having much more time on my hands so contemplating buying it finally.
My issue is whether it is indeed worth purchasing a 4 year old game of which I already know the general story?
You see i'm unsure whether like many old games i'm interested in the idea of playing it rather than actually playing the game itself, as it's not unusual for older games to become rather dated to the extent that you pick it up, play it a bit but never really properly bother with it due to the mechanics being so dated that it's hard to enjoy. Would that be the case with this? Or is the story so immersive that I should be able to overlook it?
Obviously a lot of you guys and gals round here vastly prefer ME1 (yeh longtime prowler) over ME2 so figured it may be worthwhile for myself to sign up and ask people that have evidently spent a lot of time on both games their opinion.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
If you don't play the first game, the general story is already set in Mass Effect 2. The choices you make in the first game largely decide how the second and third games will pan out and what the overall experience will be (ex. Council dead or alive, Virmire decisions, romances, etc.). Even the side missions have a semi-effect.
As far as the overall story goes, Mass Effect 1's story advances the plot more than ME2 does, and to get an understanding and feel for the universe, I recommend playing ME1 at least once. I played it 12 times in a timespan of one week (
In short, if you want to truly experience Mass Effect, play the first game, and then upload your save game to ME2.
